The J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts is the beating heart of Texas Tech University. We're a close-knit creative community with all the advantages and resources of a world-class public university—and we bleed Raider Red! Our students from all over the world shine with Texas-sized ambition, curiosity, and compassion. New students join a community of 1,100 arts-obsessed

undergraduate and graduate students—including DMA and PhD candidates—spread across three different schools:

School of Art
School of Music
School of Theatre and Dance

Talkington is a confidence-building, mind-expanding artistic journey with an infinite number of destinations. Talkington grads are theatrical sound designers, independent filmmakers, and modern dance teachers. They're gallery owners, experimental sculptors, and Chicano art historians. They're symphony conductors, opera singers, and Broadway performers. Most importantly, our alumni lead rewarding lives marked by unceasing creativity, hard work, and honest expression—habits that they learned right here at Talkington.

Alumni Spotlight: Byron Ashley, MFA Studio Art '25

Byron is currently completing a residency with Taos Ceramics Center, and is featured in an exhibition at the center that opened May 23rd and runs through May 31st.

He said that the program at Texas Tech University School of Art fostered a cross-pollination of media, where he began blending printmaking and ceramics to develop his artistic style.

Having recently completed a 2 day Screenprint Glaze workshop at Santa Fe Community College, Byron is very excited to announce he will be teaching both Glaze Chemistry and Intro Handbuilding at Santa Fe Community College in the fall!

Congratulations to TCVPA's May 2026 Banner Bearer, Ashleigh Adams!

Ashleigh is graduating from the Texas Tech University School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design.

"What made my time in the graphic design program so special was the lifelong friendships I built and the opportunity to be involved with AIGA. I was also honored to travel to Mexico City, Mexico, with the School of Art as part of the National Center for the Arts student exhibition."

Following graduation Texas Tech University, Ashleigh plans to keep growing and learning as a designer while working in the DFW metroplex, and can't wait to see what the future brings!

Did you know?

Symbolizing the Light of Knowledge, the Texas Tech University Presidential Mace is the symbolic staff of the power and authority of the university.

It is constructed of lathed and molded bronze that has been rubbed with a layer of 24K gold. The school crest is presented on either side directly under the flame. Hand-rubbed black walnut has been used for the connecting shafts. The mace was designed by Texas Tech University School of Art Professor Robly A. Glover.

Professor Glover's artwork is on display throughout the United States and included in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Yale Silver Collection, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Lubbock, it’s art weekend!

The Lubbock Arts Festival is happening today and tomorrow at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, and it’s absolutely worth stepping out for. Artists from all over the country, immersive installations right as you walk in, and so many pieces that make you stop mid-stride.

Make sure you swing by the booth, say hi to Carol Flueckiger, and cast your vote for your favorite student piece for the next Flower Power turbine design.

This year’s theme is “Bloom,” so expect florals, color, and a whole lot of creative energy woven throughout the space. Don’t miss the “New Floral” exhibit featuring Miriam Dubinsky and a garden-inspired installation by TCVPA.

April 18–19, Sat 10–6 | Sun 11–5, $7 (kids 12 & under free with paid adult)

Go soak it all in and support some incredible artists 🎨
