The public dissertation defense of Matthew Acre will be held today at 3:30 CST in Fish and Wildlife 101 at Texas Tech University. His defense will provide a detailed look at Blue Sucker (Cycleptus elongatus) life history and current status in the lower Colorado River, Texas. A species once harvested commercially throughout the United States, it has experienced dramatic declines throughout its range. The population in the Colorado River has been presumed to be in trouble for several years. Several biotic and abiotic factors have been identified as likely suspects in the decline. This research will shed light on those concerns.

The attached YouTube link is the defense stream that will air live this afternoon! All interested viewers are encouraged to tune in. You may leave research questions for Matthew through the YouTube stream or this post.

Last week there was a trending twitter challenge to : a call to researchers to sketch their study organism or topic in Microsoft Paint using their non-dominant hand. Here is the Guadalupe Bass interpretation by M.S. student Heather Williams.

New publication out by the Guad Squad: J. Pease, T. Grabowski, A. Pease, & P. Bean. This research highlights observed morphological variation between historic and contemporary Guadalupe Bass collections, throughout the Colorado River Basin, in relation to changing land- and water-use patterns. https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.4349

Papillous lips of the Blue Sucker (Cycleptus elongatus)! Papilla are fleshy projections of dermal tissue found on the mouth of some fish. Taste buds are located on the tips of these projections, which help Blue Sucker select their food in the drifting current as they hug to the bottom of the river. Not all catostomids (suckers) have papillous lips. Redhorse species have plicate lips which look like fleshy folds. Lip morphology within this family is so diverse that researchers often use lip characteristics to identify between the species. Follow us on Instagram

We have changed the name of this page because all future posts will highlight project updates from the TTU research on Blue Sucker and Guadalupe Bass flow ecology relationships in Texas. Though this page is no longer ‘Grabowski Aquatic Research Lab’, we acknowledge the continued guidance of our fearless leader, Dr. Tim Grabowski! Tim started his position as Unit Leader for the Hawaii Cooperative Fishery Research Unit in 2016. Though we miss him here in Texas; we will always consider ourselves Grabowski Lab East! You can follow Dr. Grabowski’s Hawaii research updates here: https://www2.hawaii.edu/~tbg/index.html

Heather Williams, a researcher at the Texas Tech University Llano River Field Station, caught this beautiful 1.72lbs Guadalupe Bass, on the South Llano River. Location and lure are closely guarded secrets. It was released shortly after the photo taken.

Footage of a couple Blue Sucker captures (from a boat captain and netters view) during the latest mark-recapture event on the Colorado River.

Researchers under this project have all federal safety permits, state permits, and TTU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee permits to perform boat electrofishing surveys and handle this state threatened fish.
