In many instances, the law enforcement officer is the first figure of authority at the scenes of sudden illness, motor vehicle crashes, shootings, stabbings, drownings, and related incidents. Although emergency medical service providers will be on the scene shortly, the officer, as a first responder, must know what actions to take until they arrive. Citizens look to the officer for professional action and guidance. If the officer is indecisive, ineffective, and does not control the situation, the mission of the law enforcement officer to protect and serve will suffer. But more importantly, many victims themselves may be subjected to needless suffering and death that could have been prevented. Certainly, the actions taken by the officer in those first critical minutes can make the difference between life and death, and the responding officer can become a vital link in the chain of the medical response system. The purpose of the First Responder block of instruction is not to make a law enforcement professional a health care professional but to give the officer the knowledge and skills whereby the officer can function as a viable link in the critical care of a victim and can help sustain life and prevent further serious complications until relieved by health care professionals.

A Big Thanks goes out to Lumberton Rescue and EMS Inc. for allowing the Robeson Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy Cadets to receive hands-on training on their various equipment and a tour of their facility.

Tuition for the training is FREE, and financial aid may be available to cover the cost of books and uniforms.

Situations may arise where a human life depends on the endurance, strength, and agility of a responding officer. Health and fitness are an integral part of the personal and professional life of every officer.

Today, at the conclusion of training, Robeson Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy Cadets underwent direct exposure to Aerosol/Chemical Sprays, specifically Oleoresin capsicum administered by certified instructor, Sgt. C. Lowry. The information and training provided in this block of instruction is to familiarize the student with mainly the psychological and physiological effects of OC spray. The need for less than deadly types of weapons for law enforcement officers is a recognized reality. With the use of aerosol sprays, the officer has at his/her disposal a non-deadly weapon which is effective at controlling non-compliant subjects, while producing no known lasting injuries. It, therefore, can provide a level of safety for the officer, the subject, animals, and the general public.
