Look at this great change! Let the world win!

It's been three months since we “trashed” our disposable utensils, because going in the trash is the only outcome for something designed to be thrown away. In their place, we now have metal utensils that you can take with you (and bring back if you’d like).

This change has been a great success. Here are the numbers:

• In 2024, we purchased more than 33,000 single-use disposable utensils every three months (both stores combined) at a cost of $4,267.

• Since April 22, 2025, we have purchased 2,200 metal utensils at an expense of $2,976 (both stores combined).

This means that in three months, we've kept over 33,000 pieces of plastic out of the waste stream, and we've saved almost $1,300!

We weren’t the first to do this, but our program’s success has inspired other food co-ops to do the same. As of July 1, Lexington Food Co-op in Buffalo, New York is now only offering durable metal utensils to their shoppers.

They join us, BriarPatch Food Co-op in California, Ashland Food Co-op in Oregon, Weaver Street Market in North Carolina, and Moscow Food Co-op in Idaho in this successful plastic-reduction initiative.
