We're very proud to highlight the internship achievements of one of our students, Stephen Druse. Stephen has been interning at Mt. Rushmore.

"My Ranger’s Choice Talk talks on the geology, agronomy, and biology of the Black Hills region, along with the geologic history of South Dakota going back 62,000,000 years. During this talk, I’m able to paint a picture to the visitors on how the entire ecosystem is connected in an intricate web, and how all parts of that web led to the designation of Mount Rushmore (or its other name, the Six Grandfathers) as a sacred site by the Lakota people of the area; that same sacredness would attract settlers to the mountain to rename it, which then attracted Gutzon Borglum to the region to carve it in the first place."

"I help bring the mountain and the people of it to life, and connect the visitors to the land itself."

"This job has allowed me to put into practice the full portfolio of skills that I’ve secured during my time at WIU."

And just like that, we close out the 2024-2025 academic year with the graduation of our Masters and Bachelor students! Today’s commencement message was to lead, be authentic, and serve plus in times of challenge: persevere, adapt and overcome…and our students will do just that as they enter the next phase of their career journey! We wish all our graduates the best and can’t wait to see where they go in life!
