The Upsilon Psi Chapter is the 946th House of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated chartered on the campus of Middle Georgia & State University on February 17, 2017. Joseph Lindsey (GZ'64), president of the local graduate chapter, to discuss the possibility of bringing NPHC Greek organizations to the institution, specifically chartering a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. In
Spring of 2015, additional efforts to attract Greek-lettered organizations were led by members of the Brothers of Leadership and Distinction, under the advisement of Brother Demetrius Smith (ΞΤ'08), created "Get ‘Em to the Greek," a NPHC Greek showcase. The purpose of the event was to expose the campus community to NPHC organizations and to garner interest in bringing chapters to the college. Later that semester, the students were introduced to Brother Juawn Jackson (ΜΓ'14), then assistant area director for the Middle Georgia Cluster. They discussed the possibility of bringing a chapter to the campus. Many ideas were considered including the formation of a city-wide charter with the Mu Gamma Chapter at Georgia College & State University, but the consensus was to charter a new chapter at the institution. In the Fall of 2016, efforts to charter a chapter had gained ground as the Epsilon Beta Lambda alumni chapter agreed to sponsor the charter at the institution. A chartering interest meeting for the fraternity was organized on September 26, 2016, at now Middle Georgia State University. A letter was penned on behalf of the gentlemen gathered to the fraternity, formally requesting the formation of a chapter. Jackson and Bro. Smith accepted the letter on behalf of the Epsilon Beta Lambda chapter and began the long and tedious process of completing the paperwork necessary for chartering a new chapter. After much discussion, deliberation and maneuvering, on February 22, 2017, Middle Georgia State University became the home of the 946th House of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. with the designation Upsilon Psi, becoming the first NPHC Greek-lettered organization to arrive on the campus. The train carrying the future charter members of the Upsilon Psi chapter is expected to arrive Fall 2017.
