Cool article alert! "Cool Class: Truth and Crime," by L&S's Aaron Conklin, outlines a brand new Constellations course taught by Prof. Ralph Grunewald that asks "What is 'true' about true crime?" Truth and Crime (English 174) is a highly interdisciplinary course that explores the true crime genre, combining literature with media and legal studies, psychology, forensics, and many more. Check the L&S News page or copy the link: https://ls.wisc.edu/news/cool-class-truth-and-crime UW-Madison English

Every year, the 300-400 students in Grunewald’s Criminal Justice 131 course would pepper him with questions sparked by the true crime shows and podcasts they voraciously consumed.

Students from Professor Giuliana Chamedes' fall 2022 Constellations course, Fascism: Then & Now (History 366) created narrated videos as part of their final capstone research projects, instead of doing traditional academic papers. Student projects focused on Mussolini's attempt to shape the female role in a fascist society, both through a pro-natalist initiatives and avoidance of engagement with working women, as well as his insistence on local Italian products - no imports - as part of the national diet. The image shown here comes from UW student , whose video, "Our Freedom is a Step Towards Your Freedom," explores the rise of black internationalism in response to the Spanish Civil War to illustrate the parallels between European fascism and racial politics in the United States.

Looking for a GREAT CLASS? Legal Studies 131: Criminal Justice in America has open seats!

Through an interdisciplinary prism, the course addresses social and legal implications of the various stages a typical case moves through, beginning with issues of policing, like the requirements for searches and seizures, to the moment when an individual reenters society after a prison sentence. Throughout the course, themes like factual vs. legal truth, public safety vs. individual rights, and differing conceptions of justice are exposed and discussed. Students will learn to think critically about law as a system and how tightly interwoven legal doctrine and people’s convictions about justice are.

Some discussion sections reserved for students pursuing the Criminal Justice Certificate.

Looking for a GREAT CLASS? History 366: From Fascism to Today: Social Movements and Politics in Europe has open seats!

This class investigates the unsettling history of European and American Fascist movements in the twentieth century. Taking a comparative approach, it analyzes how Fascist movements developed on both sides of the Atlantic after World War I. Key topics include the long shadow of European imperialism when it comes to both racism and militarism; the fragility of democracy after 1918; why and how Fascism and Na**sm garnered popular, transnational appeal; and the emergence of anti-Fascist social movements in both Europe and the United States.
