🌟 Spotlight: Andrés Pertierra 🌟

Meet Andrés Pertierra (he/him/his), a 5th year History PhD candidate at UW-Madison, specializing in Latin America & the Caribbean. His research delves into post-1959 Cuban history, particularly the Cuban Revolution's survival during the profound crisis of the 1990s, known as the ‘Special Period.’

Thanks to IRIS’ support, Andrés will spend the summer laying the groundwork to shed new light on this pivotal era, transitioning it from journalistic coverage to rigorous historical scholarship. His multidisciplinary dissertation will not only deepen our understanding of Cuba but also offer insights into similar systems worldwide.
