Earlier this week marked the 58th anniversary of a very dark day on our campus.

On May 26th, 1968 – the Sunday of finals week – UW-Madison freshman student, Christine “Chris” Rothschild, was found murdered on campus next to Sterling Hall.

For nearly six decades, UWPD has continuously investigated her murder; however, we are seeking your help to find the person responsible. We request those who knew Chris in any way to reach out and share their experiences with us. Whether you attended or visited UW-Madison during this time or lived in Ann Emery Hall, where Chris resided, we want to hear from you. Perhaps you saw something or someone and were unaware of the significance of this information.

Throughout our investigation, we have partnered with state and federal law enforcement agencies to utilize all resources to re-examine Chris’s death. We have reviewed and followed every tip received on the investigation. We are thankful to those who have provided these tips and information; there may come a time when we need to recontact you.

There are occasions when people who may have knowledge initially do not come forward. We also know there are times when people do not provide everything they know during an interview with law enforcement. This may be due to their close relationships with those who might be involved, as well as concerns about their own safety, reputation, or standing in the community and amongst their friends. We recognize relationships change over time, as do people and their perspectives.

Even if you think your information is insignificant or believe we are already aware of it, please contact us and allow us to make that determination. Every piece of information helps.

Anyone with information about Chris Rothschild is asked to contact the UWPD Tip Line at 608-265-2345 or email [email protected]. Anonymous tips can be shared through Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014, or online at www.p3tips.com.

UWPD Officer Kirchman STAR IPE Germany Diary, Day 16: It Ends. Another Sunday, day of rest, in Germany. My hosts felt I could do with a couple more helpings of European history. We started at Burg Ronneburg, a mostly-intact 12th-century castle, where tours and historical re-enactors taught us a lot about medieval life. We then moved on to the fortress city of Büdingen, to walk around, through, and on the historic city walls and enjoy a rest in the central ‘Platz’. Today represents the end of my time in Germany as part of the STAR program. I’m enormously grateful to UWPD for being so supportive of this program and my involvement. Tomorrow I’ll begin a few days of self-guiding myself around Germany before returning home.

UWPD Officer Kirchman STAR IPE Germany Diary, Day 15: Giving Back. Today I had an opportunity to repay some of the kindness my hosts have provided. Volker & Sabine are actively involved in the operation and upkeep of a local nature education camp for children, Jugenwaldheim. In many ways it’s quite similar to UW-Madison’s Upham Woods facility. Today the local Lions Club planned to help with a work day, and I was welcomed to join in. We prepped the camp buildings for an upcoming event, then spent the rest of the morning cutting and clearing a wooded area for a future building project. After a hearty lunch of bratwurst and potato soup, the Lions Club presented the camp with a small generator to help with operations.

UWPD Officer Kirchman STAR IPE Germany Diary, Day 14: The End…Sorta. Today represented the last official day of this year’s STAR program in Germany. Of course, all of us are looking forward to September, when our new European friends will visit us in the US. Appropriately, our final activity was a visit to Point Alpha, a museum and memorial to the times of a divided Germany, that now stands testament to international cooperation and wound-healing. We then moved to the nearby village of Geisa, located in the former East Germany, for our final meal as a group. Toasts were made, gifts were exchanged, and stories (mostly true) were shared as the program came to an end. Most of my fellow Americans will begin making their way home tomorrow. But for me, the journey continues for a little while. Watch for more to come…
