Humanities NOW: The Humanities as a Toolkit for Citizenship

We'll examine how the humanities strengthen our capacities as citizens—both within our immediate communities and in broader civic contexts. Our esteemed panelists will highlight key components of the humanities “toolkit,” such as media literacy, historical awareness, and interpretive and rhetorical skills.

Why do we turn to the past in order to confront the crises of the present?

Thursday at 5:00 PM, please join Professor Michael Rothberg (UCLA) for "Comparison Controversies: Historical Analogy and the Politics of Holocaust Memory"

At this talk, Rothberg approaches this question from the perspective of “comparison controversies”: impassioned public debates that emerge from provocative historical comparisons.

https://humanities.wisc.edu/event/hwb-michael-rothberg/

Since October 7, 2023, political speeches, protests, magazine articles, and social media posts have generated controversy by connecting recent events in Israel and Gaza to the Holocaust. Rothberg will consider post-October 7 examples in relation to a larger context of comparison controversies and a longer trajectory of Holocaust memory in order to reflect more generally on the possibilities and pitfalls of historical analogy.

The event is free and open to all. We hope to see you there!

Congratulations to recent UW-Madison graduates Lauren Stoneman, Natalie Suri, and Zitong Wang, winners of the 2025 Iwanter Prize for Undergraduate Research!

It was another competitive year for the Iwanter Prize with many compelling entries.

Stoneman (B.A. May ’25 History, Philosophy, and Political Science) received the Iwanter Prize for her senior thesis: On the Right to War: Reconciling Modern Nuclear Disputes with the Christian Just War Tradition.

Two Honorable Mention Prizes were awarded to two students: Natalie Suri (B.A. May ’25, History, Politics, and Educational Studies) and Zitong Wang (B.A. May ’25, Japanese and International Studies).

The annual Iwanter Prize for Undergraduate Research recognizes graduating seniors who, through the senior thesis and general academic distinction, demonstrate outstanding humanities-based scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature.

The prize was established in 2000 by alumnus Sidney E. Iwanter (B.A.’71, History) and is about legacy and the passing of intellectual curiosity from one generation to another. Iwanter continues to support the undergraduate humanities and the love of learning at UW-Madison, stemming from his belief that, “a well-rounded humanities education is the keystone to an informed electorate and a healthy society.”
