Before the end of the semester, Comm Arts graduate students took on the task of hosting the third-annual Midwest Graduate Student Film and Media Studies Symposium at UW–Madison. Film and Media Studies grad students from all over the Midwest joined together to share ideas, provide support, and eat some pizza!

The Spring 2026 semester has reached its end, and with it, countless Communication Arts students have hit “submit” on their final assignments for the year. In Professor Kelley Conway’s Film Festivals course, students had the opportunity to get creative with their final project. Rather than solely offering an option for students to write a research paper, Conway allowed them to visually document and investigate aspects of the Wisconsin Film Festival. Henry Jenkins (PhD, ’89), Comm Arts alum and Provost Professor of Communication, Journalism, and Cinematic Arts at USC, took us through his prolific career as a researcher, professor, and media consumer. As of 2026, Jenkins has 23 published works, and his scholarship on media studies has been cited over 88 thousand times. Jenkins is a recipient of the 2026 Communication Arts Distinguished Alumni Award and recently spoke at the Communication Arts graduation. Last week, we welcomed back Comm Arts alum Lindsey Pipia (BA’18) to connect with our students and chat about the career journey that has helped her become a White House Producer for MS NOW. With early roles at NBC News and Inside Edition, Pipia has made great strides since her time at UW, and her story was an inspiration to our students eager to start their own careers in journalism and political communications.
