Congratulations to our Brother of the Month for March—Chinh Kieu, DPH-2! Chinh completed her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Denison University. In her free time, she loves to travel; she is looking forward to getting on a plane and flying somewhere new once it is safe to do so. Chinh attended multiple rush events, and she felt very welcomed by the Brothers of Kappa Psi, which is why she decided to join. She feels like Kappa Psi makes it super easy to make friends and to get involved outside the classroom. A piece of advice Chinh would give to another pharmacy student is: “Join KΨ! I definitely received a lot of help and support from our brothers and they are such a great resource if you ever need an advice on classes or anything pharmacy related!”

If you are looking for a new takeout place to try, Chinh recommends Saigon Noodles on Odana Road!

Congratulations to our Brother of the Month for February—Drew Vander Velden, DPH-2! Drew completed her undergraduate education at UW-Milwaukee, where she received a B.S. in Biochemistry. Since school keeps her busy, Drew enjoys spending her free time with her two older sisters and their ADORABLE dogs. This past summer she also really enjoyed exploring downtown Madison, taking socially distanced walks with her friends, and spending time by the lake. Drew joined Kappa Psi because she wanted to develop skills to be a successful pharmacist & create life-long relationships with other students, faculty, and alumni. She thinks the Brothers of Kappa Psi are the kindest and most welcoming people she’s met thus far in her pharmacy school experience, and they have made her feel like she belongs since day one! A piece of advice Drew would give to another pharmacy student is: “Try not to compare yourself to other people. Pharmacy school is competitive, and there are so many different and unique paths you can take, but choose what feels right to you, even if it isn't what everyone else is doing.”

If you are looking for a movie for your next movie night, Drew recommends The Pianist!

As the Spring semester begins we have our chapter nominated Brother of the month for January- Lauren Johnson, DPh-3! For undergraduate education, Lauren graduated from Saint Mary's College in Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular biology. With the COVID-19 pandemic, Lauren has changed what she likes to do in her free time. She has been reading novels that previously sat untouched on her bookshelf for years, and she recently found her old sewing machine. She's been making her dog new toys with lots of squeakers inside! Lauren joined Kappa Psi because every brother that she met was fun, welcoming, and easy to talk to. A piece of advice Lauren would give another student is: "You can do anything, but not everything! No matter how busy life gets, make sure to make some time to take care of yourself".

The chapter nominated Brother of the month for December is Kathleen Tierney, DPh-2! For undergraduate education, Kathleen graduated from the University of Minnesota Rochester with a Bachelor of Science in Health Science. Kathleen enjoys digital painting, playing video games, baking, and going on walks. Kathleen joined Kappa Psi because it seemed like a great community to make friends and lasting connections in pharmacy school and beyond. A piece of advice Kathleen would give another student is: “Be social! I decided to put effort into making friends and putting myself out there when I entered pharmacy school, and being able to rely on a social network of student friends with a variety of experiences has helped me immensely, especially as classes transitioned online over the past year.”

The chapter nominated Brother of the Month for November is… Thomas Lofy, DPh-3! For undergraduate education, Thomas went to UW-Madison for biochemistry. During his free time, Thomas enjoys reading books and watching movies, and considers himself a movie expert. Thomas joined Kappa Psi because he didn't know anyone entering pharmacy school and it seemed like a good opportunity to meet new people, with the comment: “Little did I know it would lead to some of my closest friends in pharmacy school”. A piece of advice Thomas would give another student is: “I would go back and tell myself to enjoy your time more. Pharmacy school is extremely busy and feels overwhelming sometimes but take the time to enjoy time with your friends.”

A new type of post to this page is… brother of the month! For October, our chapter nominated Lexi Plourde, DPh-3. Lexi went to UW-Madison for her undergraduate education. During her free time, Lexi enjoys drawing and watercolor painting, walking around town and hiking at state parks, learning new songs on her guitar, and playing video games. Lexi joined Kappa Psi to make new friends in pharmacy school and to increase her involvement in the Madison community and pharmacy community. A piece of advice Lexi would give another student is: “Never shy away from new opportunities during pharmacy school. You never know what you will enjoy until you get the chance to experience it for yourself, so place yourself in a variety of classes and experiential sites where you can try them out in a low stakes environment.”

For the brother of the week we have... Miranda Rang, DPh-3!

“Over the summer I've been working as an intern, which takes up a majority of my time. When I've been able to, I have been going home to work on my newly acquired project car, a 1967 Chevy Impala, and to see my family. This fall, I'm looking forward to going seeing the last seven episodes of Supernatural. I am also excited to make a trip to an apple orchard to get fresh cider and apple doughnuts. My hobbies include reading, watching TV, riding my ATV, and trying new recipes.”

Starting up again after quite a while is brother of the week!
For this week we get to know Kelly Vanderloop, DPh-4

“This summer I have been spending time at APPEs. I got to see long term care pharmacy as well as specialty. I am very excited about my picks so far as they are entirely different from what I have experienced working so far. This fall, I’m looking forward to being able to spend time with my family and take part in yearly traditions once more. For example, I am excited to pick apples with my mom or help make candy after thanksgiving. I get to help with our family garden and hopefully I will eventually get to do things like that with friends once COVID dies down. I like to knit and paint for my hobbies, and I’m looking into trying embroidery too. I like to do these while watching youtube or whatever show I like at the moment as well as playing video games and reading.”
