As our UW-Madison Insect Diagnostic Lab recently posted, "Spongy moth (Lymantria dispar) season has officially begun here in Wisconsin!" These spongy moth caterpillars were spotted in Walworth county this past weekend and in other places throughout southern Wisconsin. As we continue to warm up, areas throughout the state should be seeing them soon too (not all of Wisconsin is affected).

While it's tough to say if this year will be as challenging as last year's, there are still things you can do to help minimize damage to your trees. These caterpillars will continue to grow and eat, and become quite voracious and damaging feeders on landscape trees. Find out more about actions you can take this year from the Insect Diagnostic Lab's recent article: https://insectlab.russell.wisc.edu/2023/05/05/2023-spongy-moth-season-kicks-off-in-wisconsin/
