From pond hockey and running across a frozen lake to practicing interstitial brachytherapy on a grapefruit, our students have many fun memories to share!

We asked our upcoming graduates to take just a minute to reflect on their next steps, favorite memories, and what they’ll miss about Madison.

Welcome to Wisconsin - Alexander, Ryne, Kevin, Madelyn, and Madison! We are thrilled these five will be joining a group of 17 undergraduate STEM students for this year’s Academic Summer Student Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE) in Advanced Radiological Sciences.

Alexander Rasmussen - Alexander is a physics student from Michigan Tech University who will be working with mentor Kevin Eliceiri this summer. Eliceiri is working to develop computational imaging systems that combine novel biomedical optics and deep learning based on analysis to study the role of collagen rich fibrosis in cancer onset and progression.

Ryne Starnes - Ryne joins us from Florida State University where he is studying both physics and astrophysics. This summer Ryne will be working with Alan McMillan to research AI-based automated quality assurance for MRI.

Kevin Tanious - Kevin is a physics student at Yale University and will spend the summer working with mentor Carri Glide-Hurst. His research will focus on upright radiation therapy projects pertaining to proton therapy and dosimetry.

Madelyn Tavelli - Madelyn is joining us from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor where she is studying biophysics. Madelyn will also be joining mentor Carri Glide-Hurst this summer working on upright radiation therapy projects related to proton therapy and dosimetry.

Madison Wilson - Madison studies physics at Berea College and will be joining mentor Kevin Johnson this summer. Johnson studies cardiovascular age prediction from MRI, and flow phantom development.

While the spring semester may be winding down, we’re ramping up for a fantastic summer welcoming 17 new undergraduate students to our Academic Summer Student Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE) in Advanced Radiological Sciences.

The ASSURE program’s primary goal is to inspire undergraduate STEM students to pursue a career in radiological sciences through a full-on immersion into research and our community. Students will be joining us from all over the country starting on June 1.

Join us in welcoming these students to Madison!

Gabe Ambrose - Gabe joins us from the University of San Diego where he is studying biophysics and math. Gabe will be working with mentor Ivan Rosado-Mendez and working on quantitative ultrasound data analysis.

Ben Ameku - Ben is studying health physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He will be joining Michael Lawless and studying the sensitivity and accuracy of radiopharmaceutical therapy dosimetry calculations and drawing correlations between the dosimetry and patient response.

Janice Amornthanomchoke - Janice is currently a student at UW-Madison studying biomedical engineering and will be working with mentor Paul Ellison.

Will Cammin - Will is studying applied physics at Michigan Tech University. He will be joining mentor Tim Szczykutowicz whose lab studies photon-counting computed tomography optimization.

Angelina Castillo - Angelina joins us from Southern Adventist University and is studying physics and math. Angelina will be working with Ahtesham Khan who researches ultra-high dose rate radiation (UHDR).

Giovani Cheema - Giovani studies physics at Carleton College in Minnesota and will be working with Oliver Wieben. Wieben researches cardiovascular MRI including post-processing of 4D and 5D flow MRI data for measurements including flows, vorticity, kinetic energy, and pulse wave velocity.

Riley Dachel - Riley joins us from the University of Iowa where she is studying physics and math. She will also be working with Ahtesham Khan who researches ultra-high dose rate radiation (UHDR).
