Prevention Speaks

Prevention Speaks Stories help people understand the benefits of prevention in public health policy.

Prevention Speaks, through the Wisconsin Clearinghouse of UW-Madison, began as a partner in the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) project by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC's Communities Putting Prevention to Work program funded 50 communities through a two-year cooperative agreement from 2010-2012 to reduce chronic disease related to obesity and tobacco using evide

Through evidence-based strategies, these communities strove to improve access to nutrition, increasing physical activity, and reducing the consumption and initiation of tobacco use as well as exposure to secondhand smoke.

A professor's latest research, which charts the growing link between physical activity and brain function in children, was released Tuesday, and the results, he says, could change the role of physical education in schools nationwide.

You've heard of farm to school, right? Well, communities make the most of natural assets: in Maine you can find boat to school, with local seafood available on the cafeteria menu. Glenn Libby from Port Clyde explains why and how they made it happen.

Things were grim for the fishing industry in Port Clyde, Maine, a few years ago: there were record high prices for fuel, and low prices for fish—fishermen could barely afford to stay in business. A co-op was formed to tackle marketing and processing the catch.View Transcript

Most of us are suspicious of change. And if it were easy to make school lunches 100% healthy, it would've been done already.

Students get more fruits and vegetables under new nutritional requirements for public school lunches, but many children just toss them away.

We've launched PreventionSpeaks.org with a new design. There are a few glitches with the transition from old to new; we're in the process of fixing those. We hope the new site is easy to use once you're used to it, and easy to understand if you're new to it.
