WUD Alternative Breaks

WUD Alternative Breaks We're a group of students at UW-Madison who plan service learning trips for our fellow Badgers! We offer trips during Winter and Spring Breaks.

The WUD Alternative Breaks Committee plans service learning trips across the country for UW-Madison students. All of our trips take place during either Winter or Spring Break, but we also plan issue and service events during the school year. If you're interested in being a part of the committee or doing service work with us, check out our page at: http://www.union.wisc.edu/altbreaks

Last winter we sent a group of ten students to St. Louis to work with an organization named LifeWise to learn about food insecurity and how it can affect one’s life, an issue that has been gaining awareness exponentially in the past few weeks. Food insecurity can come in different forms but, in general it is the lack of consistent access to food. In this time of crisis as more and more people find themselves out of work or on reduced hours the number of people pushed into food insecurity has increased dramatically. This brief from Feeding American discusses the impact of the corona-virus on food insecurity. This is the perfect time to research your local food bank and see if they need help or donate to national organizations like Feeding America. With everyone staying home to flatten the curve many food banks are facing a lack of volunteers when they need it the most. Second Harvest in Wisconsin is currently looking for care box packaging volunteers where so they can deliver food to vulnerable populations that cannot leave their homes, all of their volunteers stay at least six feet from each other when packaging to stay safe.
