Ivy Tech becomes first community college in nation to earn International Dyslexia Association accreditation 🎉🎉

Ivy Tech Community College’s Elementary Education program has earned accreditation from the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) for its literacy coursework, becoming the first community college in the nation to achieve the distinction.

IDA accreditation recognizes educator preparation programs that meet rigorous standards for Structured Literacy and evidence-based reading instruction, including practices that support students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.

The work included redesigning literacy coursework, aligning curriculum with nationally recognized standards and providing extensive professional development for faculty across the state.

Congratulations to our graduates at IDOC Miami Correctional Facility. We are proud of you!

Ivy Tech hosted a graduation ceremony at Miami Correctional Facility last week for 34 incarcerated students - 🎓 4 students earned their GED, 💼 20 students graduated from Business Technology, and 📦 10 students graduated from Logistics.

Ivy Tech Site Manager Wenig welcomed the students and served as the keynote speaker. Wenig commented that “Graduation is a reminder that there are men who want to make real changes in their lives. Ivy Tech is happy to be a part of helping them do that.”

Pursuing education and investing in yourself can be an important pathway toward successful reentry into society. Ivy Tech’s programs provide opportunities for personal development and improved job skills, helping students prepare for their futures beyond incarceration.

Each graduate received a certificate and a congratulatory handshake from MCF Leadership Staff and Ivy Tech Regional Leadership. Students were also able to share this special milestone with two family members, followed by a celebration with cake, cookies, and punch. 🎉

The Indiana Department of Correction honored Jim Irsay this week with the donation of a handcrafted wooden bench bearing the late Indianapolis Colts owner’s name. The bench was created by students participating in a woodworking program offered at New Castle Correctional Facility through Ivy Tech.

“We are proud of our partnership with the Indiana Department of Correction that helps prepare the incarcerated population for life after release, and we are honored to be a part of a project that recognizes the legacy of an Indiana icon,” Ivy Tech President Marty Pollio said.

⭐️ Alumni Highlight ⭐️

Ivy Tech Madison alumnus and 2022 Distinguished Alumnus Cory Stephens, DNP, MSN, RN, CNE, NI-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, has been selected for the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Specialist Roster following recommendation by the program’s Peer Review Panel.

Dr. Stephens, valedictorian of Southwestern High School’s Class of 2005, began his higher education and nursing journey at Ivy Tech Madison. While at Ivy Tech, Stephens served as president of the Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Psi Lambda Chapter and held a Federal Work-Study position in the college’s testing center and IT help desk, providing early opportunities to develop leadership, service, and technology experience. Dr. Stephens graduated in 2014 with an Associate of Science in Nursing.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright Specialist Program connects highly accomplished U.S. academics and professionals with institutions abroad for short-term projects focused on knowledge exchange, capacity building, and international collaboration. Stephens will remain on the roster for three years and is eligible to be matched with projects in more than 150 countries worldwide. The broader Fulbright Program counts 63 Nobel laureates and 98 Pulitzer Prizes among its alumni.

“We are honored to have such outstanding alumni. We hope all of our alumni will continue to share their accomplishments, pursue new opportunities, and show what is possible with an Ivy Tech education,” said Dr. Amanda Harsin, Ivy Tech Madison Chancellor.
