We're proud of Jaclyn Hauben x'28, a Computer Sciences and Data Science double major, who was one of the winners of this year's Pacific Life AI Actuary Challenge. Her team took a creative yet practical approach to the prompt — determining whether health data from wearable devices like FitBits could improve the company's risk prediction models. 

Hauben credited ’s fast-paced hackathons, especially MadHacks, with preparing her for the intensity of the competition. 

“Having that similar layout was very helpful,” she said, in addition to applicable course work in the Statistics and Computer Sciences departments.

Janice Rice, emerita senior academic librarian at College Library, was recognized on April 24 with a 2026 Distinguished Achievement Award from the UW-Madison School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences. This award acknowledged Rice's long career with UW–Madison Libraries and her significant impact on expanding information access for Indigenous communities.

The donations come from what’s referred to as the Catalyst Collective — a group of alumni, business leaders and corporate partners who have pledged major investments in the college.

We're proud to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Wisconsin Library School, founded in 1906, the predecessor of today's Information School.

“A librarian should be bigger than the day's work and its routine,” wrote Mary Emogene Hazeltine, pictured, who led the Wisconsin Library School, from 1906 to 1938. Librarians should have “a vision of the field as a whole, but while working towards the plans of the future.”

As new technologies reshaped how information circulates, the Wisconsin Library School became the School of Library and Information Studies in 1981 and the Information School in 2017.

The department’s recent move to Morgridge Hall created a rare moment to take stock of its materials at scale. Over the past two years, a team led by Collections Project Coordinator Bronwen Masemann has cataloged tens of thousands of items — one of the most comprehensive collections of library and information science resources in the country.

To explore what this rediscovery has surfaced, we spoke with Masemann, iSchool Librarian Greer Christensen‑Gibbons MA’24, and Library & Information Studies student Maria Hellenbrand MA x’27.
