On November 17th, 2020, for the second time in a month, the police in Thailand had used unprovoked violence against the unarmed pro-democratic demonstrators in front of the parliament in Bangkok.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the parliament on Tuesday in support of the amendment to the Thai constitution, a move which could lead to the disempowerment of Prayuth-Chan-O-Cha's supporters in the government and the reforming of the Thai Monarchy.

Despite the fact that the demonstration had been peaceful and unarmed, the police used high-pressured water infused with chemical substances and colors, fired rubber bullets, and setting up razor-sharp barb wires to stop the demonstrators. Once the clash had ceased, the police forces retreated. Intentionally or not, their retreat allowed pro-government counter-protesters to attack the unarmed demonstrators, resulted in even more wounded and injured. These intentional and reckless actions led to unnecessary violence and injuries.

We, The Thai Student Association at UW-Madison, condemn this action and we call for an end of violence by dictating the military government of Prayuth Chan-O-Cha against the unarmed pro-democratic demonstrators in Thailand.

Demonstrators are demanding changes to the constitution drawn up by Thailand’s then-military rulers.

On Oct 16th, 2020, Thai Police had used excessive force and violence against unarmed demonstrators calling for a reformation of the Monarchy and resignation of the ex-military junta Prayuth-Chan-O-Cha and his parliament. During the clash, police have used pressurized water infused with colored chemical substances and tear gas to defuse the peaceful demonstrators. The use of unnecessary violence and military tactics has caused significant injuries, as reported throughout social media.

In the name of the Thai Student Association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, we condemn and denounce such acts of violence and military tactics. We call for an end to this disgraceful violence by the dictatorial military government led by Prayuth Chan-O-Cha against the unarmed pro-democratic demonstrators in Thailand.

TSA would like to take this special moment to congratulate our TSA graduating class of 2019, 2020, and visiting scholars on their achievements and devotion to their field of studies.

We hope that your time here as a Siamese Badger at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has filled you with precious memories you will continue to cherish no matter what part of the world your heart takes you.

Although this might seems like a farewell, I assure you that this is just the beginning of something bigger than anything a crystal ball can tell you. And as much as we will miss your swaggy smiles and joyful laugh, we are excited to see what the future holds for you.

And with that said and done, we hope this won't be the last time we see you on campus.

Once a Badger, always a Badger.
U-rah-rah!
