When your Poster Presentation is at an Auto Gallery!

Some of our Green Bay WARM students recently presented posters at the Brown County Medical Society (BCMS) student poster event at the automobile gallery in Green Bay.

They had fun presenting AND checking out the cool cars! Brenen Skalitzky M2, Emma Penfield M2, Alec Brenner M3, Seela Raj M3 and Liz Collinson M2 were joined by Dr. Michael Medich, former medical education director at Green Bay.

Thanks to Seela and Liz for their leadership as student liaisons for BCMS. And congrats to Brenen and Emma, who won first and second place, respectively, for their posters!

For 100 years, UW’s preceptorship program has prepared medical students for real-world practice. Today, we celebrate Drs. Jessica Schmid and Anna Svircev, recipients of the Max Fox Preceptorship Award.

Family medicine physicians at Southwest Health in Platteville, Drs. Schmid and Svircev have collectively mentored 25 medical students since 2018, offering hands-on clinical training grounded in trust, autonomy and patient-centered care.

We are grateful to them and the many preceptors across Wisconsin for their dedication is shaping the next generation of Badger physicians!

Here’s to all our fantastic alumni nationwide who are exceptional teachers, educating the next generation of physicians. Anne Marsh, MD ‘07, associate professor in the UW Dept. of Pediatrics’ Division of Hematology, Oncology, Transplant, and Cellular Therapy, recently received this tribute, in part, from a resident:

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with Dr. Marsh. I learned so much simply by observing her in patient rooms, where she conducted herself with both expertise and warmth. She consistently balanced clarity, empathy, and reassurance in a way that made a lasting impression on me.

What stands out most about Dr. Marsh is the way she made me feel. Her kindness and compassionate presence created a welcoming environment where I felt comfortable, included, and valued as a learner. She has a remarkable ability to connect with people on a human level, recognizing their emotional needs and responding with care and understanding.

Her example reminded me of why I chose to go into medicine in the first place. I hope to model my future practice after the qualities Dr. Marsh embodies. She listens deeply, treats everyone with dignity, and leads with empathy.”

Thank you, physician educators, for all you do to not only teach but inspire our learners!

We remember, honor and thank all the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation.

Shout-out to MSTP student Jared Boyce, who received the Young Scientist Award to attend the 2026 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting this summer in Germany, an international forum that brings together Nobel Laureates and outstanding early-career scientists from around the world. This was awarded by Sigma Xi, the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific research honor society for scientists and engineers.

Jared is an emerging physician-scientist whose work sits at the intersection of neuroscience, medicine, and social impact. His scholarly interests focus on understanding how early-life experiences—particularly trauma—shape brain development and long-term health outcomes, with the goal of advancing more equitable approaches to care for underserved populations.

“This year’s meeting is interdisciplinary, which resonates with me since my doctoral research integrates several fields within neuroscience and concepts from physics. As such, I am excited to meet and exchange ideas with Nobel Laureates and other young scientists from across the globe.”

Congratulations, Jared!

There’s nothing like “hands-on” medical education!

The Plastic Surgery Interest Group recently hosted the Surgical and Procedural Workshop and included 14 surgical/procedural specialties (Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, ENT, Interventional Radiology, OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Anesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Urology, and Pediatrics).

Each department had a table with a different procedural skill/technique they were demonstrating. There were residents and faculty from each department who ran their respective stations, demonstrated their technique, and networked with students. Each student had the opportunity to rotate through 3 specialties of their interest.

Thanks to all our awesome teachers and learners at this great event highly attended by medical students!

There goes John Ziegler, MD ‘21, boosting his “Girl Dad” sobriquet again!

“Maimouna and I were thrilled to welcome Jasmine Rebecca to the world in February! We are savoring the snuggles as we adjust to life as a family of 5.

I am finishing my multiple sclerosis fellowship at University of Minnesota, and after graduation this summer I will join the staff at HealthPartners in the Twin Cities, where I will practice outpatient general neurology, multiple sclerosis, and neuroimmunology.”

Great seeing you and your beautiful family, Dr. Ziegler!

DM us if you, too, have a who would like a baby bib!

When, in the course of your work representing UW SMPH, you schedule a meeting with a in Seattle, thinking you’ll be having a cuppa in a coffee shop…and instead he takes you hiking in the Cascades!

Haloooo, irrepressible Kenneth Feldman, MD ‘70! Dr. Feldman has run seven marathons and climbed Mt. Rainier 13 times. He loves to talk UW-Madison, but don’t expect to do it over coffee! At (almost) 82, this former UW Hoofer will smoke you up a mountain and loves showing Wisconsin folks the beauty of Washington. He’s currently preparing for a 10-day hike through Japan. He’s ready!

Thanks for being an incredible role model to us all, Dr. Feldman. And almost happy birthday!
