UW Space Place Space Place is the education and public outreach center of the UW-Madison Astronomy Department http:

The University of Wisconsin has been at the forefront of innovative astronomical research for over a century. To encourage students, teachers, and the general public to learn, think, and talk about space science and research, the UW Space Place first opened in a refurbished Ponderosa Steak House in the summer of 1990. Over the years, Space Place has grown into a vibrant public education center. In

August 2005 we moved into a beautiful new custom designed facility in The Villager, with professionally designed exhibits, a classroom space, lecture room, and a roof top deck for sky viewing. We provide hands-on activities, lively presentations, and informative lectures by UW researchers. Each year we offer over 100 free, public programs and open our doors to well over 10,000 visitors. In December 1968, the world’s first autonomous space-based astronomical observatory carried seven telescopes from UW–Madison, designed and built by a plucky band of scientists in an unassuming warehouse on South Park Street.

"Marigolds on Mars: Turning Space Green" by Prof. Simon Gilroy, Dept. of Botany
Can plants flourish in an environment in which there is no up or down, such as in space? Could plants be grown in alien environments, such as on Mars? Prof. Simon Gilroy researches how plants grow both in his Wisconsin laboratory and on the International Space Station, and his research could some day find applications on other planets.

Saturday Science is back at Space Place! This Saturday (9/30) we will be making paper circuits. Join us starting at 10:00 AM to learn more about electrical circuits and to make your own light up picture (for children ages 6-10 and their families).
