Join us for Asian futures, without Asians by Astria Suparak, with live musical accompaniment by Tammy Lakkis. During this performance-lecture-screening, Suparak investigates how Asia and Asian identities are imagined in film and media—often without Asian voices or representation. Through curated clips and commentary, Suparak's multimedia performative lecture questions: What does it mean when so many white filmmakers envision futures inflected by Asian culture, but devoid of actual Asian people? Free registration is required for this event, which takes place at the Play Circle on Wednesday March 11 and Thursday March 12.

HAPPENING TODAY! "Movement & Storytelling with Dana Tai-soon Burgess"
Wednesday, 5:30 -7 pm, Chazen Museum of Art
Dana Tai Soon Burgess speaks about and presents dance inspired by the art of Okinawan-American Toshiko Takaezu. Called one of America's most "compelling and conceptually innovative artists of the last century", her career began when (along with Burgess' mother Anna Kang Burgess) she left her plantation home in Hawai'i to study ceramics at the Cranbrook Academy. Having close family ties, Burgess presents an intimate perspective of this boundary-crossing master.

Join us for an intimate keynote with Dana Tai Soon Burgess, blending conversation, performance, and cultural insight to show how dance bridges past and present. As the Smithsonian’s first choreographer-in-residence at the National Portrait Gallery, Burgess is known for transforming galleries into immersive stages. Members of his company will perform, including an excerpt from 'Landscapes: A Tribute to Toshiko Takaezu.'

East of LA is a stand-up show that features Asian American comedians in the Midwest. Originally at the Lincoln Lodge Theater in Chicago, this show is coming to Madison for one night only to highlight Asian American comedians and their experiences in the Midwest and show those of us on the coasts that you don’t need to be near salty water to be funny.

With performances by Yzzy Zarate, Syed Hasnain, Jerry Tran, Sonal Aggarwal, and William Paik.
