The stem of the inflorescence started growing in mid April and the first flowers just opened this week. 🌱 Plant of the Week: Flamingo Flower (Anthurium andraeanum)

Brightening the greenhouse with its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant “flower”, the flamingo flower is actually showing off a colorful spathe- a specialized leaf that surrounds the plant’s true flowers.

🌿 Adapted to warm, humid environments, flamingo flowers have thick, waxy leaves that help conserve moisture, making them well suited for life as understory plants beneath the rainforest canopy.

They're a standout favorite in our greenhouse collections!

🌱 This American mangrove is showing off its intricate root system- a critical structure for stability, nutrient uptake, and gas exchange.

Mangroves are specially adapted to thrive in waterlogged, low-oxygen soils, using their roots to anchor themselves. A healthy root system is the foundation of a healthy plant, and a reminder that so much of life happens out of sight 🔍

Meet Olivia (she/her), our Social Media Volunteer!

📸 Olivia helps capture what's happening in the Botany Garden and Greenhouse and share it with you all!

Her favorite part about volunteering is getting to see plants grow and bloom week to week. She also enjoys the warm temperature and quietness of the greenhouse ☀️

✨ Olivia's favorite plant is the Mount Lip Orchid (Phalaenopsis) because its sparkly petals always catch her attention!

🌱 Plant of the Week: Rosy Hen-and-Chicks (Echeveria pulvinata)

This week’s feature in the greenhouse is the succulent Echeveria pulvinata, commonly called Rosy Hen-and-Chicks. Native to southern Mexico, this species is known for its velvety, silver-green leaves edged with rosy tones.

🧡 This plant produces clusters of bright orange, bell-shaped flowers that rise above the rosettes. Like its name suggests, the plant also forms small offset, “chicks”, around the base!

Next time you visit the UW–Madison Greenhouse, keep an eye out for this soft and colorful succulent in the collection! 🌵
