Today at noon in the Payson Library Surfboard Room, Pepperdine Libraries is pleased to present a panel discussion exploring Seaver College professor of English Michael Ditmore's latest book, "Texting the Nation: Agencies and Actions in the Declaration of Independence" (Routledge, 2026). In the text, Ditmore analyzes the language, grammar, and rhetoric of the U.S. Declaration of Independence to reveal how its structure shapes ideas of political agency and authority. It examines the document's drafting and editing process while tracing its intellectual roots in Virginia political thought. Joining the panel are Tim Perrin, senior vice president for strategic implementation, and Lisa Smith, assistant professor of teaching of English.

Psalms 19:1–2 paints a glorious picture of how the cosmos testify to God’s handiwork. Both in awe of the Creator and the created world, King David wrote: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.”

In recognition of these verses, Deborah Haarsma, astrophysicist, author, and the former president of BioLogos, an advocacy organization devoted to sharing the interplay between science and Christianity, has devoted her career to the study of the world beyond our own. On March 11, the Pepperdine community was given the special privilege of hearing Haarsma’s insights on Christian faith and science at the 21st annual Frank Pack Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture hosted by Pepperdine Libraries' Rushford Center.

"When visitors step into Pepperdine’s Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art's latest exhibition, they enter a story about how modern art inspires us to see differently. The museum’s newest show, A Modern Look: Selections from the Permanent Collection, draws from Pepperdine’s own permanent collection and unfolds across three distinct gallery spaces: an intimate “hall of fame” of modern masters, a vast room of emotionally charged large‑scale works, and an upper level of tactile sculpture, found objects, and optical experiments. Together, these rooms reveal the many faces of modernism and the significance of diverse expression."

Last year, our campus community and neighbors were deeply impacted by the Franklin and Palisades fires. We recognize that these events continue to shape our community in profound ways and that for many, these memories remain vivid and personal. Pepperdine Libraries invites you to help us build a community archive that documents and preserves this period of our history. We are asking for photos, videos, and social media posts that reflect your experience during the fires and their aftermath. If engaging with this material presents emotional discomfort, please feel free to reach out to the Counseling Center for support at 310-506-4210.

For those who want to contribute in a supportive environment, the Libraries will be hosting an event on Wednesday, February 4, 4-6 PM, in the Payson Library Seminar Room, where we invite you to spend some time gathering your materials and writing down your memories to include in the collection. There will be snacks, crafts, and counselors on hand for support. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for oral history interviews.

Participation is voluntary and donations are welcome any time. Please fill out this form to begin the process: https://bit.ly/4qzA66m.

More than 1,000 students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community attended a flurry of events at Payson Library this fall. Our new Chamber Music at Noon series was met with great fanfare as student performers delighted the audience with music by French composers during the October concert and scores by Johannes Brahms in November. Presentations in the Surfboard Room included a variety of themes, with lectures illustrating the University's Christian values, celebrating our faculty's scholarly work, and presenting the latest research from scholars across the nation. Stay tuned for another packed lineup in the spring semester.

The traditional Japanese tea ceremony, chadō, transforms tea preparation into an art of living. In recognition of life's transience, chadō's meditative pace is grounded in disciplines of presence and gratitude. A warm cup of green tea is served with intentionality and sipped in repose, a ritual holding more than 450 years of history. As part of Seaver College's International Education Week, Pepperdine Libraries partnered with the International Studies and Languages Division to host a demonstration of chadō on November 20, 2025.
