Our first-years are eagerly preparing for final exams next week! In their Clinical Reasoning course, students had the opportunity to create a visual mind map to review and connect topics reviewed over the semester.

Key concepts that students learn in Clinical Reasoning include the domains and scope of occupational therapy practice, the process of delivering OT services, and activity analysis. Knowledge and skills gained during this course serve as a foundation for other courses throughout the rest of the program!

"The things that we take for granted everyday, like bringing a toothbrush or a fork to our mouth, they're not able to do," she says. COVID-19 patients exhibited "severe debility, acute skin failure, musculoskeletal disorders, proximal upper limb weakness, decreased endurance, and ICU delirium." The priorities of the OT team shifted, and Neuss and her colleagues began to focus on "upper extremity evaluations related to brachial plexus nerve innervation, cognitive evaluations, providing appropriate seating systems and education on skin management techniques in collaboration with the rehabilitation team, breathing techniques, and activity modification."

"The most basic difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy is that a PT focuses on improving the patient's ability to move their body whereas an OT focuses on improving the patient's ability to perform activities of daily living."

Physical therapists and occupational therapists both fall within the rehabilitative sciences and share many similarities, however there are distinct differences in the approach each takes with a patient's rehabilitative care.

"MCPHS Faculty Contribute to Leading Occupational Therapy Text"

In the newly released 13th Edition of Willard and Spackman's ā€œOccupational Therapy,ā€ a textbook widely considered to be a leading resource in the field, MCPHS students will have access to coverage of critical concepts and practices penned by two familiar faces.

With a new semester kicking off on the Manchester campus, occupational therapy students will soon be gaining hands-on experience in the lab.

"I think it has made me realize that I won’t know everyone’s story. For instance, if I’m working in a pediatric clinic, I won’t know what the kids are going home to, or what resources they might lack. That’s part of the MCPHS coursework, but until you really have those experiences, it’s difficult not to assume that everyone has the same resources and opportunities as you."

Arianna Harris, MSOT, is already finding ways to give back: every summer since her freshman year of high school, the New Hampshire native has traveled to El Salvador to volunteer in a single village, San Jose Villanueva.
