Black Student Union
Manchester Community College

Meeting Summary: The Black student Union met on the 31st of October, 2016. The meeting was convened in room c211 at 4:00 pm.
Our main focus is geared towards the upcoming White House Education Summit being held at Manchester Community College. Initiative to be undertaken include;
• Ice Radio (Carl Ngobeo) – advertising and interviewing the B.S.U. and the White House Summit
• Outreach to other colleges (Jeanelle Biscstte) – contacting and inviting surrounding colleges to support the White House Education initiative. (MCC home page, board of regents)
After the summit, we will be focusing on a toy drive. We do have a list of organizations we could donate to but will select only the organizations that help those in dire need. We have not set a limit on the amount toy we would like to collect so as to be able to donate to multiple organizations. This however, depends on the generated response to our toy drive initiative for Christmas.
• Brianna will be doing a rough draft if a flyer for our can drive and possibly toy drive.
• Phillip will reach out to the B.S.U. advisors and to the college deans to develop a felt presence on the college campus
Thank you all for your attendance and participation.

Hello everyone, I was surprised with the outcome and rich dialogue we shared yesterday during the meeting. Carl and Dalon presented their sketch for the three on three tournament. In reference to the tournament,we discussed who would possibly be a referee for the games or if we would need to have officials. We came to a group vote that we will do the college tour which is anticipated at a later date. But we would like to do the mentoring at the YMCA on Albany Avenue in Hartford. Several members have expressed their concerns about the time and dates. As I explained I will reach out to Anette at the YMCA and see if we could either have members go in small groups to work around their schedule. (I will have more details about what times are exceptional to her and we will go from there). Also, I will have reference sheets available to all members by the next meeting so that I can hand it in. We also talked about ideas/ suggestions on events we can have for the month of November or December.( members suggested a potluck, habitat for humanity etc) Members are concerned if we would still be able to go to the historical black museum in New York). Each member was introduced to a new task. The task includes a note keeper (Jeanelle Bisatte), Keeping track of the minutes(Dalon Scott), Club Advertiser( Carl), page Reviser( Solomon Dejesus). Keep in mind we will rotate with the club jobs weekly. Each week during our meeting members who were assigned a task will present what they have completed.
In addition to the meeting we had two new faces Benjamin Duda and Rebecca Duda( thank you again for coming to the meeting and expressing your interest for coming back for next weeks meeting)
Please contact the president Brianna Nelson if you cannot attend the meeting or will be late. By doing so I will be able to prepare notes and keep you up to date with club information. You can either text my cell (347-359-8087) or email me at [email protected]
Thank you for your efforts and see you next Monday at the next meeting on 10/24/16 at 4pm - 5pm in room C211. ( Everyone please bring in a sketch of the three on three tournament flyer so that we can finalize, get it approved and start to post it around campus!)

Through much support from the Cultural Programs Committee, the MCC Foundation and the Student Government Association tickets are now available for an overnight bus trip to Washington, D.C. Nov. 11-12.
The bus will leave campus at 9 a.m. the morning of Friday, Nov. 11, and return to campus late Saturday, Nov. 12. In between will be a night tour of the Lincoln Memorial, the MLK Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial and several others and a tour of the newly-opened National Museum of African-American History and Culture. Pres. Obama just opened this latest addition to the Smithsonian campus on Sept. 24. If you have not heard anything about it, visit https://nmaahc.si.edu/. There will be some free time Saturday afternoon to explore other sites in D.C.

The cost is just $50 for students and $55 for guests/non-students. That price includes transportation, lodging and two meals. Sign up in SSC L-149.

We’re sending one bus so first come, first served. Thanks for your help spreading the word about this great opportunity,

America's first national museum dedicated to African-American history and culture opened Saturday with emotional but joyful words from the country's first black president, who said he hoped the stories contained inside will help everyone "walk away that much more in love" with their country.

On Friday, September 30, from 11am-1pm, CSCU President Mark Ojakian will host a CSCU Student Leader Forum at Manchester Community College in the GPA Community Commons (2nd floor). This town hall style meeting is for student government leaders to share their concerns and ideas for promoting public debate on campuses this fall.
We are currently looking for student leaders to attend and we are asking for questions in advance (there will be an opportunity to ask additional questions during the meeting but we want to have some structure) from each campus in the CSCU system. Student leaders can also submit questions using during the town hall meeting.
