UNH Manchester History and Humanities

UNH Manchester History and Humanities More Information to Come The History program at UNH Manchester offers BAs in History, with particular strengths in American, European, and Public History.

Students benefit from small class sizes and access to professors who are also active scholars in their fields. We are developing a new emphasis on Public History. Most Americans learn history not by sitting in classrooms and reading scholarly monographs but rather through a broad array of encounters with public history. Every year millions of Americans visit museums, historic sites, monuments, and

theme parks. They take walking tours, watch film and television, listen to music, and attend plays and festivals created or influenced by public historians. Public historians also shape state and federal policies on matters as diverse as land-use, public commemoration, and social welfare. Professor Macieski is currently teaching a Public History course that examines the history and contemporary practices of public historians and museum professionals. It provides an introduction to the theory, methodology, and practices of public historians. It encourages interdisciplinary thinking about the past, drawing from various disciplines and fields such as museum studies, historic preservation, oral history, documentary film making, historical editing and archival practices, archeology, ecology, and folklore.

Tomorrow Monday May 22 at 7:00 -- Join us at the New Market, NH, Historical Society for an illustrated lecture exploring child labor in New England during the Progressive period from 1890 to 1918 as captured by the photography of Lewis W. Hine. Professor Robert Macieski will examine the relationship between “social photography,” as Hine called documentary photography, and movements for social reform.
UNHM Professor Macieski is an Associate Professor of History with fields in 19th and 20th century American social history and specialties in urban, industrial, and immigration
history, and the history of race. He has won the UNHM Teaching Excellence Award and has been the recipient of a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in History at Moscow State University.
