K-State physicist Dr. Meng Han has received two prestigious awards for his molecular dynamics research!

Dr. Han studies what is happening inside a molecule at the exact moment change begins--in a billionth of a billionth of a second. Using "super-fast cameras," he and his team, which includes students, are gaining a better understanding of how molecules bond, react and behave, and developing tools to initiate and measure molecular activity once considered too fast to observe.

He received both a U.S. Dept. of Energy Early Career Award and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award this year, placing him among a very small group of early-career researchers nationally.

Congratulations to K-State's newest Goldwater Scholar, Vivian Nguyen, a physics and mechanical engineering major from Dodge City, Kan.! She is one of only 452 undergraduates nationwide—out of nearly 1,500 applicants—to receive the 2026 honor.

Vivian is conducting agricultural research in the industrial and manufacturing systems engineering department to explore ways to detect phosphorus—which can affect soil, crop growth and water quality—by using electrochemical sensor. She has also done other mentored research projects in mathematics, physics and electrical and computer engineering.

Congratulations to Dr. Patricia Calvo, in chemistry, on receiving a Big 12 Faculty Fellowship!

Dr. Calvo works to develop functional polymers for applications in biomedicine, environmental sustainability, and advanced materials.

She'll use the fellowship to travel to University of Central Florida for training in materials characterization techniques for electronic materials and explore how polymer systems developed in her lab can be integrated into flexible electronic devices.

Meet English professor Shirley Tung. For Dr. Tung, stories aren't just artifacts from the past; they're tools for understanding the present.

Tung examines how today's cultural dynamics mirror those memorialized in centuries-old literature, finding her purpose in uncovering human patterns and sparking conversation around shared experiences. She believes that literature puts us in touch with a universal humanity that unites us across cultures and time, and exposes us to new ideas, places and viewpoints that broaden our minds.
