KAKE-TV sports anchor/reporter Hannah Whetstone '26 got her start in broadcasting at K-State thanks to her communications professor, the late Ian Punnett, believing in her, fostering talents she didn't know she had, and ushering her into a career she hadn't considered.

One experience that really changed her perspective was her summer internship at KMBC 9, the Kansas City metro ABC affiliate.

Hannah Whetstone ’26 tried her best to convince her communications professor that she wasn’t interested in student radio. However, the late Ian Punnett — who was a K-State professor of practice and adviser for Wildcat 91.9 FM KSDB — would not take no for an answer.

With a $1.8M U.S. Dept. of Educ. grant, K-State is helping K-12 educators improve their instruction of American history and civics through the use of founding documents like the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights.

The 'Educating for the Republic' program—presented by K-State's Department of Political Science, A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication and College of Education—aims to help more than 45,000 Kansas students better understand America's founding principles, texts and civic practices.

The grant covers educators' four-day seminar fee and other expenses. Eight more seminars will be offered over the next two summers in various sites across the state. Participants receive professional development credits.

Last month a group of K-State students immersed themselves in an authentic photojournalism experience, where they adapted to changing conditions, interviewed local experts and documented the beauty and diversity of Alaska while building career-ready skills.
