Protective factors are influences that help children develop resilience. Resilience is the ability to overcome traumatic experiences and events. A combination of factors and experiences help set the stage for children to develop resilience. They include:

Facilitating supportive adult-child relationships

Building a sense of self-efficacy and perceived control

Providing opportunities to strengthen adaptive skills and self-regulatory capacity

Mobilizing sources of faith, hope and cultural traditions
