How do veterinarians determine what's “normal” for a toad? 🐸

In this feature, VHC's Dr. Gretel Tovar-Lopez shares how her research is helping establish neurological baselines for Sonoran desert toads, giving veterinarians valuable tools to better diagnose disease, injury, and health concerns in amphibians. Her work is revealing that even closely related species can respond very differently during neurological exams.

As amphibian populations face increasing environmental challenges, research like Dr. Tovar's is helping advance wildlife health and conservation efforts.

We’re excited to introduce another new face at the Veterinary Health Center: Dr. Vee Nadruz! 🐴

Born and raised in Brazil, Dr. Nadruz came to the United States to pursue new career opportunities and continue her training in equine internal medicine. Her journey included internships in Texas and Florida and a fellowship in Kentucky. Dr. Nadruz completed her specialty residency training through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine at K-State CVM. She subsequently completed post-doctoral work at New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to K-State as an equine internal medicine specialist faculty member in 2026.

Dr. Nadruz enjoys working with horses of all ages, with a particular interest in caring for young and geriatric horses. She is excited to return to K-State as a faculty clinician in the VHC where she contributes to the Equine Section providing clinical service, instruction and training involving a variety of equine medical topics and patient needs. Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys spending time in nature, exploring the outdoors and listening to live music.

The CVM's Center on Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, or CEZID, just received funding for Phase 2 of its mission to build research capacity and expertise in emerging and zoonotic infectious diseases. Dr. Jürgen Richt oversees CEZID and leads a host of research projects at its helm.

We were very pleased to welcome the DVM class of 2030 for their first-year-orientation tour of the Veterinary Health Center. Thanks to all the clinicians who greeted this new class of students. Looking forward to the start of classes next week.

Time to meet another of our new clinicians at the Veterinary Health Center: Before joining the VHC, Dr. Cassidy Quinn was a military veterinarian in both Washington and Japan and then became a primary care veterinarian in Whidbey Island, Washington, after leaving the military.

Dr. Quinn enjoys getting to treat pets in all stages of life and holds a special place in her heart for senior patients. Her clinical interests include small animal practice, preventative health, and surgery. Dr. Quinn is excited to be back at the K-State CVM as a faculty member after graduating in 2020.

ICU Update 8/4/26: Our small animal ICU is currently at maximum capacity and is unable to take admissions at this time.

The small animal emergency service and urgent care remain available to see patients that will not require hospitalization.

It's rodeo season, so our Equine Field Service is on location for the Dodge City Roundup to provide veterinary support, as per usual annual tradition.
