Joel Jensen: University Security Associate Director
Congratulations on your retirement, Joel! From your first two years as a student worker to 36 full-time years with the Security Department, you’ve been a steady, familiar, and trusted presence at Minnesota State University, Mankato for nearly four decades. Your dedication, reliability, loyalty and sense of humor will truly be missed.

When did you start working for MSU?
· 1st time 1977
· 2nd time 1989
Which positions have you all held here and in which years?
· 1977 Student Patrol Officer (they called us security guards then) —No uniforms
· Left department 1977 — returned 1989
· 1989 Student Dispatcher, Student Patrol Officer, Student Supervisor—leads of that era
· 1990 Department Supervisor—was a student but supervised just about everything and everyone who worked at night.
· 1990 Security Coordinator (full-time)
· 1998 Assistant Director
· 2005 Associate Director
Are there any projects or things you have done during your time at MSU that you are proud of?
· Supervised the purchase of and assisted with installation of first campus CCTV campus cameras (There were just four). 1990.
· Led the upgrade from analog to an all-digital CCTV surveillance system. 1999
· Supervised the purchase and installation of the university’s first card access system. Performed all programming. Decommissioned the campus intrusion alarm system—replaced by card access system. 1995
· Supervised the purchase and programming of the card access system in use today. 2004
· Designed and selected numerous upgrades to the security dispatch center since 1990 through the present time.
What are some of your favorite memories working here?
· Working with multiple public safety agencies during a rash of arsons on-campus.

Fun Fact: Joel witnessed many changes, especially to one building-Wiecking Center. Once the Wilson Campus School, it served 600 K–12 students from 1968–1977. Joel attended from 3rd grade and graduated in 1977.
