Our students and faculty enjoyed the opportunity to talk with German filmmakers on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Cinematographer Emre Erkmen, director Asli Özge, Dr. Rachael Hanel (Mass Media), Dr. Nadja Krämer (World Languages and Cultures) and Dr. Matthew Connolly (Film Studies) on Thursday, Sept. 26, after the screening of their film, ALL OF A SUDDEN. Erkmen and Özge were on campus through the Wunderbar Together and KINO! Germany NOW! film exchange. The focus of the program is films by German talents who have a multicultural background. Erkmen and Özge are originally from Turkey but now split their time between Berlin and Istanbul.

It's almost time to register for Fall 2019 courses. The Film Studies program is offering several courses in the Fall, including FILM 329: Film History, FILM 493: Topics in Film Studies (Topic: History of American LGBTQ Cinema); FILM 210W: Film Genres, FILM 216W: Writing About Film, FILM 217: Introduction to Film Production, among other courses. Registration windows are now open for Film and Media Studies classes in Spring 2019! Our Film Studies offerings next semester include Topics in Film: American Independent Cinema, Film Theory & Criticism, International Cinema, and Writing About Film. Our Media Studies classes include Media Ethics & Criticism, Mass Media History, and Writing & Speaking for Broadcast. The link to the schedule is below. Course offering in Fall 2016: FILM 114, Introduction to Film. There are two sections to choose from: Monday (6-9:45pm, Prof. Donna Casella) or Tuesday (6-9:45pm, Prof. Steve Rybin)

In this course, students will study and analyze elements basic to a critical understanding of film: story; visual design; cinematography and color; editing and special effects; functions of sound and music; styles of acting and directing; and function of genre and social beliefs. This course provides the groundwork for students' future work in Film Studies and Film Production courses, and also serves as a general elective for non-majors.

This course is designed to give students a foundation in film history. The course focuses on major directors, genres, and periods in film history with an emphasis on social, technological, and critical context in order to provide an analytical framework that will support subsequent work in film studies. This course is a pre-requisite for FILM 416 (Film Theory and Criticism) offered in the Spring.

Offered in Fall 2016: FILM 214-01 4 cr (Donna Casella) Film Topics: Animation (T/TH 4-5:45 pm)
Students will study the history and production of animation worldwide. Course format includes lecture, readings (animation articles), viewings (animation films) and discussion. Production areas explored include: cel animation, cut-out animation, CGI, stop motion animation, puppet animation and rotoscoping. The films studied include Akira, Chico and Rita, Waltz with Bashir, Metropia, Coraline, Toy Story and The Adventures of Prince Ahmed. Students will take two exams and prepare a web assignment on a director of their choice.

Time to announce our Fall 2016 course offerings! First up is FILM 210W, Film Genres, TUES-THURS 12:00-1:45, taught by Donna Casella. In this course students will explore a broad range of film genres including: hardboiled detective, police procedural, gangster, film noir, animation, science fiction, musical, western, war and screwball comedy. Course format includes lecture, readings, viewings, and discussion. Students will take exams (multiple choice, short essay) and write and revise a film analysis paper.
