Julie Weaver and Karen Strange, from Warren L. Karen was one of the participants in the four-day workshop and was part of the exhibition of projects at the culminating event of the experience.

Please join us this Wednesday the 20th from 4:00-5:00 in 106 Retan.

No need for a parking sticker at that time of day, and you should be able to get close to Retan, too! Come join us!

Our Friday the 15th Shout Out goes to MUEDSPE Alum Marie Domenech and her husband MU Alum Edgard “Gardy” Domenech. Marie has two degrees from MU: a B.S. Business Administration (‘01) and an MS.Ed. Education (’11). In her job as an Assistant Director of Admissions, Marie has been covering territory in New York and Western PA for MU this semester. So, in September, for example, you might have run into her in Rochester, and in October perhaps in East Syracuse or maybe Chataqua, and just last week you would have discovered her in Binghamton or Brockport. Her schedule, like many of the other Admissions staff, keeps her on the go. Across 7 days (non-sequential) in September, Marie hosted 7 recruiting events and 6 transfer events—in 12 different cities. And with October and November schedules looking very similar, it is clear that Marie, as the farmers in Tioga County say, “cuts a wide swath!” Marie’s husband Gardy is an MU graduate as well, and this year marks his 21st year working on the MU campus.

The main picture in today’s feature is from 2011, when the Susquehanna River flooded her banks, affecting many of our friends and neighbors. The picture says just a little about the kind of people we have in Gardy and Marie. They are standing (with other Admissions staff) with supplies for flood victims they gathered during a collection drive they led in Mansfield. Gardy and son Dylan are on the left and Marie is in the middle with daughter Sophie in front. The picture (in a separate posting) is of Marie and Gardy. Now that you see what Marie looks like, you can say hello if you see her in Victor, or Bolivar, or Dryden, or Erie, or Batavia, or Canandaigua, or Irondequoit, or Henrietta, or Webster, or ……………?

Our first November Alumni Shout Out goes to Jason Roscoe. Read on for a bit of Jason’s history. You’ll see how much of it has been spent here at Mansfield University.

BORN AND RAISED: York, Pennsylvania

PATHWAY TO MU: Jason’s high school basketball coach Vince Alexander (now the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of South Carolina Aiken) left York after his sophomore year to become the Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach at MU. Once Jason’s senior year came around in high school and he had to decide upon a college to attend, he chose MU instead of a larger university based on a several factors:

1. Coach Alexander!
2. The opportunity to earn a degree from a quality institution that had the student support services in place to help him along the way as a student athlete, e.g. mandatory study halls, mandatory community service involvement, and small class sizes.
3. The opportunity to play multiple sports.
4. Four former teammates were already attending MU and members of the basketball team.
5. It was a good distance away from his hometown.

UNDERGRADUATE CAREER: B.S. Criminal Justice (2004) While at MU as an undergrad, Jason was a three-sport athlete: Basketball, Football, and Track & Field. He also served as captain on the MU Basketball and Football teams.

MASTER’S WORK: M.Ed. Education/Concentration in Elementary Education (2007). While in graduate school, Jason served at the Head Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at Liberty High School in Liberty, PA – 26 miles south of MU.

FOLLOWING GRADUATION: He was an Academic Advisor at USciences in Philadelphia, PA, and he was an Academic Advisor/Adjunct Instructor at Lehigh Carbon Community College in Schnecksville, PA.

FROM 2010-PRESENT: Jason serves in a tenured track faculty position as Academic Advisor/Director of Minority Mentoring Program/FYS Instructor.

We’re so proud to have you back, Jason!

Tomorrow, look for “Jason Roscoe, Part II: ‘Advice and A Slice,' ” a program Jason brought to MU in 2012.

The October 28th Alumni Shout Out goes to David Empet, MS.Ed. in Education in 2006. We are really pleased that after graduation Dave stayed here at MU where he works recruiting students as Assistant Director of Admissions. In September, Dave brought 22 students from Sayre High School's Future Teachers of America Club to visit EDSPE. Great job, Dave! We think he's most proud, though, of son Landyn, pictured here with Dave last summer.

Give us a “Like” today for Mr. Steve Henneman and his students at Don Gill in Wellsboro! We’re giving him a Shout Out for putting his degrees to work as the Head Teacher/Computer Teacher and also the Enrichment Teacher. Mr. Henneman graduated in ’93 with an Elementary Education baccalaureate and in ’07 with his El Ed master’s—and yesterday we gave a Shout Out to his daughter Erin and son-in-law John. Excellence in education must run in the family!

Our Alumni Shout Out for today goes to John and Erin Szentesy. They stopped by our table at the “Light it Up Mansfield” weekend with their family (with Leah, right, and Luke, below).

John’s undergrad degree (’98) was Liberal Studies, and his MEd (’12) was with an Elementary emphasis. After working at Marywood University as both the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach and an Admissions Counselor, he moved to IUP for a year in the Admissions Office. Now, we are glad to have him back at MU as our Associate Director of Financial Planning.

Erin received her initial certification in ’07 and an MEd in School Library & Information Technology in ’11. She is currently teaching 9th grade English at Wellsboro High School and 3 English courses for the Wellsboro Online Academy. Erin’s dad also graduated from MU, with a degree in Elementary Education (’93), and he is currently the Head Teacher/Computer Teacher at Don Gill Elementary in Wellsboro.
