The Marietta College AAPG Student Chapter, founded on October 1, 2012, works to serve students interested in the geosciences, including but not limited to just petroleum engineering and geology students. By holding events such as speaker presentations and field excursions and attending regional industry-related conferences and meetings, the student chapter presents opportunities for members to net
work with professionals and gain knowledge on the industry outside of the classroom. Members are encouraged to apply for membership with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Ohio Geological Society. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is an international professional organization that works to “foster scientific research, to advance the science of geology, to promote technology, and to inspire high professional conduct,” as stated on the AAPG website. AAPG provides details on many different important topics within the petroleum industry, with professionals specializing in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, engineering, etc. The Ohio Geological Society, which sponsors the Marietta College AAPG Student Chapter, is an AAPG-affiliated organization that “is dedicated to the advancement of the science of geology and related fields, disseminating knowledge of geology or related fields for its members, and promoting the education of geology in Ohio,” as stated on the OGS website. The Society provides numerous educational and networking opportunities, including technical presentations, social outings, field trips, and educational workshops. For more information, visit:
