I had a great time visiting Wesley Minish's Adobe Academy McDowell County CTE classes at McDowell High School last week. I was able to inform them about the Career and College Promise opportunities at McDowell Technical Community College where they can take free college courses and promote the Graphic Design program.

Then I was able to show them how to make heat transfer t-shirts and each student got to make and keep their own "Keep On Trekkin'" Bigfoot t-shirt. We even made one for Director of Career and Technical Education Mary Finley and R2-D2. The inspiration of the shirt is the iconic 1970s "Keep on Truckin'" design by Robert Crumb (pictured below).

It was a fun visit and I hope to be able to go back soon. I appreciate the partnership we have with McDowell High School.

The Graphic Design program will be hosting our annual art show at MACA for the month of February. Our Artists' Reception will be Thursday, February 13 from 3:30 to 6:00. 14 different students have work featured in the show. MACA is located at 50 S. Main Street in downtown Marion.

Spring Semester at McDowell Tech starts January 8, 2025The McDowell Tech Graphic Design program will be offering three courses that are open to brand new students. No prerequisite is required.

ART 171 – Digital Design: PHOTOSHOP – You will learn the software Adobe Photoshop. The is a project-based hands-on learning course. No previous experience is required. You will be able to obtain the Adobe Certified Professional in Photoshop certification at the end of the course. There are two options to choose from: a seated course on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-9:50, or a fully online course. It’s an 8 week class that runs from January 8–March 5.

GRD 121 – Drawing Fundamentals – You will learn the basics of drawing. No previous experience is required. This course meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:50. It’s an 8 week class that runs from January 8–March 5.

ART 276 –Interactive Media Design: SOCIAL MEDIA – You will learn the software Adobe Express to create social media content. The is a project-based hands-on learning course. No previous experience is required. You will be able to obtain the Adobe Certified Professional in Adobe Express certification at the end of the course. This class is fully online and is a 2nd 8 week course that runs from March 6–May 7..
