MMI Gaelic Club

MMI Gaelic Club The Gaelic Club is a student group at MMI who learn Irish Gaelic w/ Dr. Sherling & attend a study abroad program in Ireland. Help us bring more students!

The MMI Gaelic Club meets weekly at Charlie Flaherty’s bookstore in downtown Marion to learn the Gaelic language, the ancestral language of all Americans with Scottish or Irish roots. Last year, History Instructor Dr. Sherling and the Cadets raised funds independently to bring three students to Ireland to take part in a Gaelic language immersion program in western County Donegal. By all accounts,

it was a great success. Not only did the students, greatly furthering their life skills, through the transformative experiences of international travel, language and culture immersion, and team-work, but they also gained course credit from Oideas Gael (the language college). After the success of the last three trips to Ireland, the Gaelic club has grown, and there are over 15 cadets attending Gaelic classes every week. This year, Dr. Sherling and the MMI Gaelic Club are trying to raise enough money to bring at least five people with them to Ireland. Please help them along their journey!

Marion Military Institute cadets & instructor Dr. Rankin Sherling were featured in a special news piece that aired around Europe on BBC News today. The Irish & international media continue to support the efforts of the MMI Gaelic Club to raise money to study the language & culture at Oideas Gael](Irish college) in Glencolumbkille, Donegal, Ireland. Thanks to BBC News NI reporter Erinn Louise Kerr for taking the time to get to know these great cadets and acknowledging the unique and valuable experience of this study abroad summer trip.

Glad to see Joe McHugh TD back in the Gaeltacht! He's a fine supporter of the Irish language and the Gaelic Club at Marion Military Institute particularly.

On behalf of the MMI Gaelic Club, we'd like to thank everyone during Alumni Weekend who helped spread the word, drum-up excitement, and most importantly donated funds to sponsor a cadet's 6-week study abroad program in Ireland this summer. For the past two summers, we have witnessed the incredible transformation of these lucky students who have attended the course and it is a truly life-changing experience. With each day on the journey, cadets are pushed outside of their comfort zones culturally, academically, physically and emotionally through the complete immersion that this trip uniquely offers into the Irish culture. The trip ignites the students minds, while offering transferrable course credits. To meet some of the cadets in the Gaelic Club and see footage of last year's adventure, please see the video below. We have not reached our goal yet, but we have faith that we will find a way. Thank you again to all those who have supported this worthy cause.
