Marion College Marion College was a Lutheran junior women's college that operated in Marion, Virginia from 1873-1967. Marion also had an active sports program.

Roanoke College, as a sister Lutheran institution, inherited Marion's endowment and welcomed its alumni. Founded in 1873, Marion College gave many women the chance to go to college who might not have been able to afford it otherwise. It was known as an excellent liberal arts school with an emphasis on fine arts as well as English, Sciences, and other subjects. Men were later allowed to attend. Alt

hough Marion College closed its doors in 1967, the legacy of excellence in education is still alive and well. Roanoke College assumed responsibility for the Marion College Alumni Association in 1967 and has been serving Marion alumni ever since. “Sure ‘nuf”—A Marion Wedding to Remember 💐
In 1956, Marion College students brought a whimsical tradition to life with a “Tom Thumb Wedding,” complete with music, cupcakes, paper carnations, and a pint-sized bride and groom. Sponsored by the Music Department and Athletic Association, this beloved event turned the gym into a stage of laughter and lace. Elizabeth Barrett and David Dillard (our charming young couple) led the day with poise and pageantry. Who remembers helping with the decorations—or maybe even singing in the College Choir?

Love is in the air and we’re looking at couples around campus. Dating hours restrictions changed throughout the college’s history. That didn’t stop our girls from having the times of their lives, and maybe even meeting the love of their lives. Did you get to celebrate with your Valentine this year?

Twinkling lights and starry nights, this was the setting for our beloved Christmas dances. The weather may have been cold, but the dance hall was warm with music, laughter, and friendship. What was your favorite dance theme from your time at Marion?

Today we share our deepest gratitude and love for Teresa as she begins a well-earned retirement.

Teresa cared deeply for Marion and for the people who make this community what it is. She didn’t just know names — she knew stories, faces, class years, and friendships. Through her incredible work, dedication, and genuine love for Marion, she built meaningful connections with so many of our alumni, and her impact will be felt for years to come.

We will miss her greatly, but we are so excited for her as she steps into this next chapter of her journey.

As we move through this transition, please know that our alumni remain at the heart of Marion’s work. I have been trained in Marion’s traditions and communications and have had the privilege of working with many of you for over a year. While there may be brief delays or uncertainty as roles are being filled, we are actively working to ensure continued care and connection, and we appreciate your patience during this time. Please do not be surprised if the email goes unanswered for the rest of winter break, as I am a student worker and must go home for the holidays. But I look forward to returning and continuing to support Marion and you all— the heart of Marion's memory. The Ideal will still be published, and I am excited for you all to see it.

Thank you for your continued grace, support, and love for Marion — and thank you, Teresa, for all you have given to this community. You will always be part of Marion’s story💜

Sincerely,

Sally Terrill
