NMU Department of Social Work For students, alumni and friends of the NMU Social Work Department.

Northern Michigan University’s Baccalaureate Social Work (BSW) program was one of the first programs in Michigan to be accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in 1974. NMU’s program has played an integral role in helping the university achieve its mission by giving students the knowledge and experiences to “become productive citizens in the regional and global community.”

NMU's Master of Social Work (MSW) program is an exciting opportunity for human services professionals to earn a graduate degree and take their careers to the next level. With a wide array of field placement opportunities across the Upper Peninsula, our flexible global campus option for distance students, and our options for clinical or macro concentration, we offer students an education that meets their individual career interests and learning needs. Our global campus option for distance students is zoom facilitated learning and synchronous with our traditional face to face courses! This is not a self-paced learning process and students will be integrated into the face-to-face classroom learning environment! This website is intended for information sharing among students, alumni, other practicing social workers, faculty and community agencies. Statements made here do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Northern Michigan University Department of Social Work or its faculty.

MDHHS seeks applicants for Michigan Opioid
Treatment Access Scholarship Program

Deadline to apply for scholarship Monday, Nov. 9

LANSING, Mich. – As part of its continuing efforts to support the expansion of access to opioid treatment, prevention, recovery and harm reduction, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is offering the Michigan Opioid Treatment Access Scholarship Program to eligible Michigan students.

The Michigan Opioid Treatment Access Scholarship Program aims to increase the number of qualified substance use disorder (SUD) professionals. It provides educational scholarships to students who are participating in a degree program that will lead to a career dedicated to providing opioid treatment services. It continues MDHHS’ commitment to addressing SUD workforce shortages and improving access to services through stipends, scholarships and loan forgiveness. Since 2019, MDHHS has provided $4.9 million to 262 students and providers.

“Michigan continues to be a leader in addressing substance use disorder, with the state’s overdose death rate declining by 47% since 2021,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive and chair of the Michigan Opioids Task Force. “By offering these scholarships, we will help Michigan students enter this vitally important field of health care, thereby expanding access for Michigan residents seeking treatment.”

Students pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degrees for any of the following health professions are eligible: social worker, professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, nurse practitioner, physician assistant and public health. Students can receive a scholarship of up to $16,000 per year, depending on the degree program they are enrolled in and how many years of support are requested in their application.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited program within the United States and sign a personal service agreement with MDHHS to participate in the scholarship program. Participants will take part in surveys and engage in program evaluation activities. A commitment to seek employment providing opioid treatment services in Michigan for a minimum of two years after graduation is also required.

Applicants must complete an online application and submit financial aid information and other necessary supporting documentation by Monday, Nov. 9. Applicants will receive an email notification of their acceptance status within 12 weeks of the application deadline.

MDHHS has allocated $2.5 million for the program, which could benefit nearly 100 students depending on how much funding participants qualify for during the program. The program is being funded through opioid settlement dollars. Michigan is slated to receive more than $1.8 billion from national opioid settlements by 2040, with half being distributed to the State of Michigan and the other half being distributed directly to local governments across the state.

For more information and to apply, visit the Michigan Opioid Treatment Access Scholarship Program website or email MIOTA-SP staff at [email protected].

Please join us Monday on campus for this special event: The Territory Acknowledgement Sign is between the Jamrich, Hedgcock, and TSA buildings near the Wildcat Statue.

The NMU Center for Native American Studies invites all to join us in celebrating Indigenous People's Day this Monday, October 12, 2026. Visit the event listing on NMU's The Hub for more information.

Gathering at the Territory Acknowledgment Sign at 11am, campus and community leaders will share remarks about the significance of six (6) years of NMU recognizing Indigenous People's Day and the importance of Indigenous perspectives for our campus and community.

We invite all to join in an 11:30am walk across campus through the academic mall to raise awareness. We encourage everyone to make signs that celebrate Indigenous People's Day and invite those with a ribbon skirt/ribbon shirt to wear them to represent Indigenous pride.

The walk will conclude at 12pm the Fire Site Pavilion located in the Whitman Woods with a sacred fire and medicines tended by fire keeper Cody Mayer and songs from the inter-tribal community drum Teal Lake Singers.

We look forward to celebrating six (6) years of NMU recognizing Indigenous People's Day! Miigwech thank you, please contact me at the Center for Native American Studies (906) 227-1397 with any questions.

In celebration of National Cookie Month, World Smile Day, and World Mental Health Day (phew!), NMU is spreading a little sweetness across campus today with a campus-wide cookie delivery. Green and Gold sugar cookies were delivered throughout the morning by a small but mighty team of cookie elves. Who doesn't love a little treat on a Thursday? :)
