Yesterday, to celebrate Arbor Day, Tribeta and our biology department measured our Moon Tree to see how much she has grown!

Luna is 162.9 cm (5 feet 4 inches) tall! That means she had nearly doubled since our first measurement last year (85.2 cm, or 2 feet 7 inches). When she's a little bigger, we'll start tracking the diameter of the trunk as well, and we plan to start tracking Luna's phenology (the timing of when leaves change color, fall, grow, etc) in the fall.

Make sure to stop by and see Luna for yourself! She's looking healthy, happy, and green. 💚

Tuesday was MHU's annual SLAM celebration, and our natural science students were well represented!

Pictured here: Zavanah Aparicio and Cece Hale, who both gave presentations; Emmalyn Buskirk, Alex Kirchoff, Kat McDonald, and Savannah Stanish, who gave posters; and winning pottery by Savannah Stanish in the student art exhibit.

Additionally, we had students participate in other events throughout the day, including the fashion show, the debate about sport betting, the Bailey Mountain Cloggers, the Cadenza literary magazine, and more! It's so great to see our students thrive - our majors are so well-rounded and active!

Students in our GIS class gave a poster session on their final projects for the class today!

These students spent the semester with Dr. Laura Boggess learning how to use GIS (Geographic Information System), which is a computer technology that allows the integration, analysis, and mapping of geographic data. Student final projects varied from local (such as what parts of the trails at Bailey Mountain Preserve might have to contend with the most erosion) to the global (such as where in South Africa black rhinos are being poached) and everything in between.

The student posters all showcased excellent work and thoughtful applications of GIS technology! Thanks to everyone from around campus who stopped by to support our students by interacting with their research and asking them questions.

On Wednesday, our introduction to botany class took a trip to Bailey Mountain Preserve to learn about problem solving in conservation and land management planning with Devi Sharp. Then we helped with one of those problem-solving efforts by "heeling in" black walnuts and spreading honey locust seeds in a restoration area by the creek. It was a beautiful day to be outside learning and helping!

Special thanks to our problem solving peer mentor Sydney Spence for planning the activity with Devi!

Dr. Laura Boggess presented at the Big Asheville Science Salon hosted by Dr. James Fuller (Adjunct Professor in Biology at MHU) this past Wednesday. She spoke on the importance of understanding cliff ecology & and role that rock climbing can have on biodiversity of lichens. Pictured left to right: Dr. Gilley, MHU alum, Tyler Pesce (who did her capstone research with Boggess at Bailey Mountain), Dr. Boggess, and Dr. Fuller.

MHU’s Animal Behavior class went camping to coastal NC recently. They saw bald eagles 🦅 soaring, osprey hunting, red bellied snakes sunning, Atlantic beach hoppers - hopping, bobcat & fox tracks & s**t, set trail cams & acoustic detectors, had bird scavenger hunts, observed grackles performing murmuration, explored estuaries & cypress swamps.

MHU students in Animal Behavior took on a community service project where we offered 5 weeks of basic obedience & problem solving training at no cost to program participants. Graduation was a success for both the human and K9 students 😉! 🐕
