SMSU Choirs The SMSU Choirs are a vibrant community of performers and scholars dedicated to choral excellence. Welcome to the Choirs of SMSU!

The Choirs of Southwest Minnesota State University are dedicated to the personal growth of every member, from that of the would-be professional musician to those interested in singing merely as an avocation-we have a choir for you! Our current rosters represent nearly all disciplines and majors on campus and contain singers from all over the world. Joining a choir is a great way to make new friends and increase your contact with the community and region as all choirs at SMSU perform and tour regularly. All choirs at SMSU are committed to the dynamic, personal growth of each singer from a musical and technical standpoint. Our distinguished faculty is unswerving in their dedication to nurturing a free, healthy tone as well as the performance of unique and challenging choral fare from the ancient to the ultra-modern. We hope that you will join us as we continue to build upon SMSU's reputation for choral excellence.

The members of the SMSU Choirs are also incredibly active in other aspects of community life at SMSU as well. Yesterday, Julia Sterner, who is not only the choirs' Vice-President, but is also one of our soprano section leaders, and who is also the president of the SMSU Oyate Club, spoke at the dedication ceremony of the Minnesota tribal flags that will be displayed in the student center. Way to go, Julia!

Each year the members of the SMSU Choirs elect a group of officers. The officers not only assist with some of the day-to-day business of the choirs, but they also help to chart the path for future choir activities. Additionally, section leaders are chosen to assist in the musical preparation of the ensembles by leading rehearsals of the various sections. All of these student leaders play an incredibly important role in the success of the SMSU Choirs. Please help us in welcoming this year’s group of student leaders.

Today, the SMSU Choirs hosted the 12th annual SingFest Choral Festival. The event brought together nearly 400 students representing nine area schools for a day of music-making and community-building. This year's event fell over the university's fall break, so it was especially wonderful to have the sound of joyful, exuberant singing ringing through what were otherwise the fairly quiet halls of our wonderful campus. Thank you to all who joined us. It was a truly wonderful day!

Homecoming is a time where we lean into tradition. Those traditions are deep and rich at SMSU, and nowhere is that felt more profoundly than for the members of the SMSU Choirs. For us, Homecoming begins with decorating our float before marching in the Homecoming parade. Then, we share a meal together as a family, before it's time to warm-up and sing the National Anthem at the football game. Today was a wonderful day of fantastic people and the community that comes of sharing time, purpose, and great art together. SMSU Choirs forever!
