"The Africana-as-commodity vs. Africana-as-identity debate remains: is it more important to signal kinship to the African identity, regardless of true origin, manufacturing, and branding as opposed to genuinely drawing out authentic African production?"

From Zamunda to Wakanda, are we more interested in Africa as a commodity? Shamira Ibrahim poses these questions and more in this great essay.

Víctor Patricio de Landaluze (1830-1889) was a Spanish-born painter who depicted slavery-era Cuba with candor and humor. He painted Cuban peasants, landowners, and African slaves. In "Nationalizing Blackness Afrocubanismo and Artistic Revolution in Havana, 1920-1040," Robin D. Moore considers him "an early representative of Cuban nationalist art" despite his conservatism. "Whatever his status," Moore writes, "Landaluze provides some of the best visual documentation available on Afrocuban expressive arts in the nineteenth century and of Cuban society generally."

The following paintings in order:
i. En la Ausencia de la Señora (In the Absence of the Lady)
ii. La llegada al baile (The Arrival to the Dance)
iii. Jugando a Los Amos de La Casa (Playing the Masters of the House)

With two museums devoted to the history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade on the way, Benin is one of a number of African countries reckoning with its role in the slave trade.

"The government acknowledges that if it wants to attract tourists, it will need to address concerns about whether Benin is whitewashing the actions of the slave trade’s architects. Advisers to the president said he plans to rename the Place de Chacha square in Ouidah, said to have been an open-air auction site for slaves.

Many members of the de Souza family are aghast at the idea.

[Moise de Souza, a descendant of prominent Benin slave merchant, Francisco Félix de Souza] vehemently opposes any mention of de Souza as a slave merchant in the new Ouidah museum.

“It’s the reputation of our family,” he said. “We don’t want to be known for this dirty thing.”"

"The late Nigerian author Chinua Achebe has been honoured in a Google Doodle, underscoring his status as a towering figure of 20th century literature."

Happy birthday to the father of modern African literature!

The late Nigerian author Chinua Achebe has been honoured in a Google Doodle, underscoring his status as a towering figure of 20th century literature.
