Theme: Approaching the Horizon
Date: October 19-21, 2021 (virtual conference)
As Missouri celebrates its 200th anniversary, it allows us all to reflect on our state’s history, but it also encourages us to look to the future.
The conference will be held virtually. (Information on registration will be available soon at MAMA Annual Meeting 2021 -- Approaching the Horizon.)

CALL for PROPOSALS
Session proposal deadline: July 1, 2021
Submit proposals electronically to Christopher Gordon ([email protected]).
Proposals should include:
• Name, Institution/Organization/Company, Address, Phone, Email
• Title of Proposed Session/Abstract or Description of Session
• Presenter’s Names / Affiliations
• Length of presentation (30, or 45 minutes)
Individuals from the museum/archives field and related communities are encouraged to present at this conference which will focus on creating optimism, growth, recovery, and new perspectives through planning and self-reflection as we strive to move forward in the post-pandemic world. You are encouraged to submit session proposals that demonstrate how you are envisioning a new future for your museum/archives through strategic planning, business modeling, incorporating new perspectives and interpretations, generating greater access, enhanced programming, or other means of creating a better institution for the next 200 years!
Sessions may be 30-45 minutes in length. We encourage you to partner with other museum/archives professionals to collaborate on a panel or present individually.

A month of popular history.

Historian Alexis Coe hosted a series of interviews in her newsletter in the month of May. “On Popular History” explores the many forms popular history can take, from journalism to novels to podcasts. While much of the content is locked to subscribers, the final interview, with the hosts of the podcast This Day in Esoteric History, is open and offers a great look behind the scenes at a popular history podcast.

Dismantling a Confederate statue is only the first step.

In December of 2020, the statue of Stonewall Jackson was taken down from the Virginia Military Institute’s (VMI’s) campus in Lexington, Virginia, after standing there for 108 years. The decision was spearheaded by four alumni, who believed it was a necessary first step, but not sufficient in rooting out the academy’s history of racism, as evident in the number of alumni who viewed its removal as a disgrace. Molly Ball writes for Time about how the statue’s dismantling has divided the VMI’s alumni, students, and leaders, brought the school’s racist past to the surface, and shown the reckoning its future holds.

Remembering the Tulsa Race Massacre a century later.

This week marks the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, and numerous news outlets are commemorating the event with thorough coverage.
