There's still time to sign up for the Great Smokies Experience 2026!

This 10-day hands-on, experiential learning opportunity is for rising high school juniors, seniors and recent high school graduates. It takes place this year July 9-20, and over the course of that time, participants will do so much more than go on hikes and paddle area waterways; they'll receive a comprehensive look at our relationship with the land, specifically our role as East Tennesseans in stewarding the future, exploring the past and taking advantage of opportunities in the present when it comes to the crown jewel of our region, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This interactive experience includes a day hike to Clingman's Dome, paddling on the Little River, an interpretive hike to Mt. LeConte and more! These are just a few of the ways our amazing staff members combine hands-on experience in nature with education...all of it counting toward college credit.

Registration has been extended through the end of June so if this experience peaks your interest or would be perfect for someone you know, share this with them!

Maryville College has received a $12,195 grant for Tennessee America 250 initiative from the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial.

This grant will be used for more resources to digitize and provide online public access to rare and unique archival material documenting early Tennessee history from the Maryville College Archives.

According to Maryville College Archivist Amy Lundell ’06, the digitized collections will be part of the project titled, “Voices of an Emerging State: Preserving Tennessee’s Early History for America." By digitizing and providing access to these archival collections via the Maryville College Digital Archives, members of the public will be able to learn more about Tennessee's early religious history, publication history, and folk music.

Thanks to a Tennessee America 250 grant, staff in the Maryville College Archives will be able to expand their digitization efforts.

In January, Maryville College was reaffirmed with the Carnegie Foundation's Elective Community Engagement Classification, and last month, faculty, staff, board members, and partners gathered to celebrate this accolade.

The College was first awarded the classification in 2020, and we are among a select group of institutions nationwide recognized for embedding community engagement deeply and intentionally across curriculum, scholarship and campus life.

The 2026 renewal validates not only the College’s sustained efforts, but its identity as an institution rooted in reciprocal partnerships with the region it serves. The classification recognizes institutions that demonstrate meaningful collaboration between higher education and community partners which is foundational to the liberal arts education offered at MC.

At the reception, Chris Freeman, Director of Community Engaged Scholars, shared the future of community engagement at the College and how it supports newer initiatives and our connection to this region.

“The Carnegie Classification tells us that we do these things well, but also calls for us to keep improving, to go deeper, and we hope that you’ll join us on that journey. As we talk about being a College ‘of and for the region’ and ‘doing good on the largest possible scale’ as our founder urged, we want to invite you to be a part of that work as well. As the saying goes, a rising tide lifts all ships.”

Last week, nearly 70 educators, business professionals, entrepreneurs, and community members gathered at the Maryville College Downtown Center for the 2026 AI Summit.

Together the group explored the impact of artificial intelligence on teaching, learning, and society through presentations from regional experts, hands-on workshops and thought-provoking discussions.

The event was graciously supported by the Blount Partnership, the Sudman Foundation, and the AtWork Group. We want to thank these sponsors for their participation.
