This week, we honor the life and legacy of Worshipful Brother Ellis T. Mills Jr., a man whose name will forever hold a place of deep respect and affection in the hearts of the brethren of Star Lodge No. 187.

It is with profound sadness that we recognize that Worshipful Brother Mills has laid down his working tools and been called to the Celestial Lodge Above.

Worshipful Brother Mills was truly a pillar of Star Lodge No. 187. For decades, he served as a guiding presence, mentor, teacher, and friend to countless Masons within their Lodge, throughout the State of Ohio, and around the world. Before his move to Texas in 2020, nearly every member of Star Lodge whose path crossed his was touched by his wisdom, encouragement, humor, and unwavering devotion to the principles of Freemasonry.

His Masonic journey was long, distinguished, and marked by faithful service. He served Star Lodge No. 187 as Worshipful Master, and also served as Worshipful Master in other Lodges, including as far away as Okinawa, Japan. He further distinguished himself through his service as Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons in Arkansas, along with his many Masonic affiliations and honorary memberships.

Worshipful Brother Mills was also a devoted supporter of DeMolay, always taking a sincere interest in mentoring and encouraging young men entering the fraternity and its related bodies. He believed in investing in the future, and many are better men today because he took the time to guide them.

To so many, he was more than a respected Mason. He was a personal mentor, a trusted friend, and an example of what it means to live the teachings of the Craft. His impact cannot easily be measured, and his absence will be deeply felt.

This week, and always, we remember Worshipful Brother Ellis T. Mills Jr. with gratitude, admiration, and brotherly love.

🌟Meet Brother Eric Hovan 🌟

This week, we proudly recognize Brother Eric Hovan. A man whose life has been shaped by service, craftsmanship, and quiet dedication to something greater than himself.

Eric retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, serving aboard the USS San Antonio (LPD-17). That chapter alone speaks volumes. Leadership, discipline, and commitment were not just part of his job. They became part of who he is.

But his service didn’t stop at sea.

For 35 years, Eric has been an active and devoted Mason. In 2012, he took on a challenge that most would admire from a distance but never attempt. He built a new altar and lighting for Tuscarawas Lodge #59 in Dover, Ohio. Not commissioned. Not assigned. Just a Brother seeing a need and answering it with his own hands.

Fast forward 14 years, and that same fire was still burning.

Now a proud member of Port Washington Lodge #202, Eric once again stepped forward to create something extraordinary for his Lodge. What began as an idea rooted in scriptural inspiration became a masterpiece of both design and devotion.

At the center of the Lodge rests a stunning star. Twelve feet across in every direction. Crafted from 140 board feet of Red Oak. Built in 16 sections to achieve a flawless two-tone finish, sealed with five coats of polyurethane, and secured with fourteen tubes of industrial adhesive. This isn’t just flooring. It’s a statement.

The dais itself is a work of art. Red Cherry, Red Oak, and Walnut brought together with precision and care. A massive 2.5-inch top supports a granite centerpiece, cradled by a design Eric engineered himself. Even more meaningful, the carvings from the Lodge’s original 1903 altar were carefully removed, restored, and given new life in this creation.

Surrounding it all are three handcrafted lights, each made from 18 individual pieces, standing over three feet tall. Every detail considered. Every cut intentional.

From the first board to the final trim, Eric invested over 227 hours into this project. No blueprints. Just calculations, experience, and vision.

And while the craftsmanship is remarkable, what stands out even more is the humility behind it.

Eric doesn’t often step into the spotlight or call attention to his work. But this time, even he admits, it’s something special.

He credits the many Brothers who encouraged him along the way, reminding us that no great work is ever truly done alone. And above all, he offers heartfelt thanks to his wife, Janie, whose support made it all possible.

Brother Eric Hovan reminds us that Masonry is not just words or meetings. It is built. Piece by piece. With time, care, and heart.

And sometimes… with 227 hours, a whole lot of oak, and just enough stubborn determination to turn an idea into legacy.

The day started with a reconsecration of Port Washington #202 with many brothers from the district and beyond. The festivities carried over to Tuscarawas Lodge #59 where the Grand Lodge Officers performed a cornerstone ceremony. The weather stayed dry long enough for the Masons of the 21st Masonic District to show their love and pride for the craft.
