🎈 Don't Drop It!
We had some purposeful balloon fun in EDUC 381 today! Each balloon represented an important concept from our eight-week course, including culture, inclusion, belonging, language diversity, family partnerships, Native American perspectives, relationships, and culturally responsive teaching.
By examining which concepts remained in the air and which concepts had been "dropped," pre-service educators reflected on the intentional work required to create inclusive learning environments. This challenged them to consider the many perspectives, experiences, and ideas that contribute to creating classrooms where all students feel valued, supported, and empowered to learn.
An active and engaging way to bring course concepts to life. 🎈

We’re Comet Proud 💫 of our current students and graduates for supporting the needs of North Dakota students! Keep up the great work, Miss Iverson and Miss Lessard! 🎶

Mayville State students are making a difference in communities across the region!

This fall, sophomore Avery Lessard and 2024 graduate MacKenzie Iverson are leading the elementary music program at Central Valley School in Buxton. Together, they are teaching music lessons that inspire young learners through singing, movement, music games, listening activities, and new musical concepts.

For Avery, the opportunity provides valuable hands-on experience while she balances college coursework, teaching responsibilities, and campus involvement. For MacKenzie, it’s another example of how Mayville State graduates are making an immediate impact in their professions.

Their story reflects what happens when learning and real-world experience come together. At Mayville State, students aren’t waiting until graduation to meet workforce needs. They’re already making a difference.

Last week, Dr. Cortney Shuley attended and presented at the American Association for Teaching & Curriculum (AATC) Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. The conference theme, Cultivating Care: Finding Meaning, Wholeness, and Courage in Education, brought together educators, researchers, and leaders from across the country to share current research and innovative practices.
Dr. Shuley co-presented with Nichol Anderson from Minot State University on "Executive Functioning and the Forgetting Curve in University Students' Learning." "Executive functioning shapes how university students encode, retain, and retrieve information, yet its relationship with time-based forgetting remains understudied in higher education. This session explores how working memory and cognitive flexibility influence learning in complex environments."
Beyond presenting, Dr. Shuley attended sessions featuring in-progress and completed research studies, innovative frameworks, instructional strategies, and emerging ideas across the field of education and research. Keynote speakers focused on educator well-being, workplace culture, reflective practice, authentic relationships, and courageous leadership. One interactive keynote exercise encouraged participants to reflect on where they carry stress and introduced simple wellness strategies, including yoga poses that can be incorporated during those "need a reset" moments.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was connecting with others who are passionate about making a difference and sharing evidence-based approaches to meeting the needs of diverse learners. Dr. Shuley returned with new perspectives, practical strategies, and renewed energy that will be incorporated into both on-campus and asynchronous courses at Mayville State University.

North Dakota needs great teachers, and Mayville State is helping answer the call.

Through the Para-to-Teacher Pathway and Registered Apprenticeship Program for Teachers, paraprofessionals across the state are turning their passion for helping students into careers as licensed teachers, all while continuing to serve the schools and communities they know and love.

Since 2023, 86 paraprofessionals have chosen Mayville State to pursue education degrees through the Para-to-Teacher Pathway, with 20 graduates already entering the teaching profession and many more on their way. Combined with the university’s apprenticeship initiatives, these innovative programs are creating opportunities, strengthening rural communities, and helping address North Dakota’s teacher shortage one classroom at a time.

At Mayville State we’re proud to prepare educators who will inspire the next generation and make a lasting difference across North Dakota.

Through general and professional development sessions, they gained insights into educational advocacy, teacher burnout, trauma-sensitive classrooms, and student teaching. Arianna and Eve described the experience as inspiring and impactful, helping them develop new perspectives, strengthen their commitment to education, and prepare for their future careers as educators and advocates for children.
