Congrats!

We’re proud to recognize James Hines IV of Tennessee Tech University, recipient of the John B. & Elizabeth Wight Memorial Scholarship.

A fourth-generation nurseryman in the making, James has spent nearly every summer working in his family’s nursery and recently completed internships at the Otis L. Floyd Research Center. His roots in horticulture run deep and so does his commitment to carrying that legacy forward.

Congratulations, James. The future of family nurseries is in good hands.

Red-headed flea beetle and tupelo borer adults have been spotted this week. Keep an eye on container Hydrangea paniculata, Itea and Weigela for flea beetle feeding damage and black gum for tupelo borer.

Beneficial insects are everywhere, including in your nursery crops. If you are using broad spectrum pesticides, you could be killing this free labor force. Whenever possible, select targeted pesticides for the specific pest problem you want to manage to prevent non-target effects. These newly hatched mantids are hungry.
