Graduation congratulations to Mary Alunni, who recently completed her B.S. degree in biochemistry. As part of the honors program, Mary did research for several semesters under the direction of Dr. Jesse Kleingardner. Her project was entitled, “Preparation for assay of novel metal-substituted heme proteins: The expression and purification of mutated HCCS.” Mary also served as a lab TA, and as a music minor, delivered a senior piano recital this past spring! It was a busy semester as Mary interviewed for and received a full tuition Abigail Geisinger Scholarship for her attendance at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, beginning this fall. Congratulations Mary! Keep finding ways to do music even as you study to become a physician!

Today we celebrate Seth Gibson. Seth graduated with a B.S. degree in chemistry with American Chemical Society Certification. While at Messiah, Seth played defense for the men’s lacrosse team. He also was a lab assistant in our department and did research under the direction of Dr. Seth Burkert for multiple semesters. His project was entitled, “Controlled Growth of Silver Nanoparticles on Graphene Oxide Substrates.” Seth has taken a job as an analytical chemist for Adhesives Research, in Glen Rock, PA. This company makes specialty polymers and adhesives for use in medical applications, a great first job! Congratulations, Seth! All the best to you.

Today we begin our senior highlight reel! Congratulations to Macy Neff who completed a degree in Chemistry with Teaching Certification. While at Messiah, Macy was a teaching assistant for the department, and did research with Dr Roseann Sachs in the “Ecocatalysis of zinc, nickel and copper utilizing the process of phytoaccumulation.” She has left my lab with a drawer of neatly labeled samples of plants grown in excess amounts of each of these metals! Macy was also a leader in our campus ministries office, specifically leading the evening Altar Chapel series, even during a busy semester of student teaching. Macy is pleased to return to Ephrata High School this fall, this time as chemistry teacher! Congratulations and all the best to you, Macy!

Our Exploring Careers in Healthcare Camp is the perfect way for them to gain hands-on experience in a variety of fields including nursing, OT, PT, lab sciences (biology and chemistry), athletic training, nutrition and dietetics, and applied health science.
