Tufts University - Department of Sociology

Tufts University - Department of Sociology Welcome to the page of the Department of Sociology at Tufts University! Visit us in Eaton Hall Room 102B.

This page is for our current students, alumni, and future students, as well as those interested in Sociology, to learn more about the subject, its study, our events, opportunities, and to engage the sociological imagination beyond the classroom. Sociology is the systematic study of social institutions, social inequalities, and social and cultural identities. Sociology studies how social structures

shape human behaviors, social categories, and social meanings. Sociology also studies how behavior (agency) in turn constructs social structure. Institutions include media and culture, health and medicine, education, the military, organizations, urban environments, law, and more. Areas of study include group identities as well as social inequalities such as race, immigration, class, gender, and globalization. Sociology students learn how to critically examine and analyze social structure and culture; how social and cultural constructs such as gender, race, and class influence people’s lives; and how people change society by forming social movements and using the media.

Q: Guess who also majored in Sociology?
A: Amanda Gorman, tomorrow's inaugural poet laureate!

The youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history will read a work she finished after the riot at the Capitol. “I’m not going to in any way gloss over what we’ve seen,” she says.

Many of our alumni know how challenging our Sociology 102 "Qualitative Methods in Action" course can be. Give it up for this fall 2020 cohort! Ten amazing students not only learned how to conduct their own original qualitative research in the middle of a global pandemic. They also weathered the transition from in-person ethnography & interviewing to content analysis & virtual interviewing with skill and grace. And, they gave their 7-minute pecha-kucha presentations on Zoom!

Sociology Speaks: Experts Explain the Executive Order on Combating Race and S*x Stereotyping

(A free ASA webinar)
[Closed Captioning Provided]

Have you read the recent Executive Order on Combating Race and S*x Stereotyping? It fundamentally misrepresents what sociologists understand about issues of power, prejudice, and status, yet it is already prompting some U.S. institutions to amend their activities. At this crucial moment of reckoning with injustice in America, let’s make sure we know the facts. Sociology provides not “divisive concepts” but tools for understanding and improving our society. Join us for a discussion with three sociologists about the ideas articulated in the executive order.

EVEN GOODBYES ARE A SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION

We are delighted today to see your bright faces!
Strewn, as we are, in such far flung places!
Poor Eaton Hall is all doom and gloom,
Abandoned for classes on WeBex and Zoom.

We sadly left seminars for Canvas and clicks
“Lectures on screen?” “I wanted Netflix!”
But you carried on, and we want to applaud
All you’ve accomplished at home and abroad.

You devoured Intro, and conquered Soc Theory
Attended our classes on days bright and dreary.
War and Peace, S*x and Gender, Criminology, Law,
Health Policy, Urban -- you’ve taken them all!

You wrote papers on race and gentrification,
Presented on politics and misinformation.
Immigration, epidemics, nation versus state,
Globalization, violence, and digital hate.

Some days felt long, through our basement you’d roam,
Though Vicky, Kathy, and John helped you feel right at home.
Exams and reading kept you up late at night,
But there was work to be done, and you did it right.

That’s why you understand Weber, explain Bourdieu with poise,
And would never let anyone gloss over DuBois.
You do not mistake correlation for cause.
Though spelling nonspuriousness still gives you pause.

For all this and more, we raise a glass
To our one-of-a-kind 2020 class.
Today is a day to celebrate with libations
But we’ll miss you in class and office hour conversations.

So, come back to the Hill—it’s our last instruction
Even goodbyes are a social construction!
