MIDN 1/C Dylan Haas Senior Spotlight

MIDN 1/C Haas was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Inspired by a deep-rooted legacy of service—including his grandfather in the Army, great-grandfather in the Navy, and father in the Air Force—alongside parents and grandparents in law enforcement, Dylan was driven from a young age to serve his country. After four years of high school NJROTC, he chose the University of Memphis to pursue a Navy commission and further his technical education.

Academically, Dylan graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, concentrating in Mechanical Systems and Automation and Control, alongside a Naval Science minor. A consistent Dean’s List student, he was proudly inducted into the Tau Alpha Pi Honor Society for Engineering Technologies. Combining his leadership abilities with a personal passion for conservation, he also founded the University of Memphis Ducks Unlimited Collegiate Chapter during his time at the University.

Within the NROTC unit, MIDN Haas held numerous key billets, most notably Company Commander, Company Operations Officer, Platoon Commander, Drill and Color Guard OIC, and OIC for this Commissioning Ceremony. Through these demanding roles, he honed his skills in organized planning, initiative, and teamwork, while internalizing the vital officer principle of always “taking care of your own.” These combined qualities earned him the title of the UofM NROTC Honor Graduate.

His summer training featured a 2/C Surface Cruise aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and a 1/C Aviation Cruise with The Gladiators at VFA-106. These impactful experiences solidified his desire to fly. MIDN Haas is proud to have received his top assignment choice as a Student Naval Aviator (1390). Following commissioning, he will report to the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, where he will earn his Graduate Degree in Systems Engineering Analysis. Upon earning his master’s degree, he will report to Pensacola, Florida, to begin flight school.

His presentation provided the Midshipmen a deeper understanding of the aviation officer pipeline, a glimpse into the life of a naval aviator, and as well as the opportunities for advanced education.

Following the presentation, midshipmen had the opportunity to ask questions and engage further, gaining valuable knowledge about this highly selective career path. Thank you, Captain Flores for an informative and rewarding visit!
